hot glow plug controller

I have an 88 f350 and my glow plug controller gets so hot that the wires get mushy and it will instantly burn you if you touch the wide wavy metal piece on the side. This can't be normal. The grounds are good. I am at a loss. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

Re: hot glow plug controller

Thanks for the response. My email is oafie@mail.utexas.edu. I need to replace the throttle cable as well because the controller melted it in half.
thanks
Brandon

Re: hot glow plug controller

I hate to hijack your thread but I have a hard-starting 1990 E350 7.3 and I suspect glow plug trouble. No matter what outside temperature it is, it's hard to start. I have to shoot it with a quick shot of starting fluid nearly ever time, unless it's already warm.

As soon as it's warm, it runs and starts fine.

When I turn the key ON, but not yet hitting starter, the glow plug solenoid clicks exactly 28 times. Is this what it's supposed to be doing ?

What's the troubleshooting procedure for suspected glow plug trouble ?

It has a new fuel filter and air filter in it.

Thanks !
