I'm wondering how this is done on my truck. The belt i have is squeaking up a storm and im gonna put on a new one. Also i cant find my Haynes Diesel manual. Its funny right when i need it, it gets up and walks away.

Re: how to take off a serpentine belt

Hey im a senior in HS too...

Anyways, look towards the very center of your engine as if you were looking at it from the front. there is a tensioning pully that has a coil spring behind it that is about 3/32" thick with a 2" diameter. On the front of the pulley should be a 14mm bolt. This bolt does not loosen.

What you do is you put the wrench on it and use that as a leverage arm to compress that spring and it lets up on the belt giving you a little slack. Use your other hand to pull the belt off at any one of the pullies.

Re: how to take off a serpentine belt

The bolt DOES loosen, it's just left-hand (reverse) threaded. On my 7.3 van it's 15mm. The tensioner is quite strong, I use a long breaker bar and socket to get it backed off enough to work the belt on and off.

The easiest way to work the belt is to take off at the tensioner first, and put back on at the tensioner last. Make sure you have a good socket and a nice long breaker bar on the bolt. Otherwise getting the belt on is very difficult.

Re: how to take off a serpentine belt

Rossman.........when you get the belt off, locate about 1/2 the distance of full travel of the tensioner and attempt to check the tensioner for worn parts by trying to wiggle it in and out on the main bolt. See my gallery pic for bolt head sizes on the tensioner and pulleys.

Re: how to take off a serpentine belt

2 points
1. A squeaky belt has many causes, a new belt may not cure the squeak.
2. If you have problems removing the old stretched out belt, how do you plan on putting the new tight belt on?

This task, while seeming simple, will/can cause many headaches.
Keep the old belt around so you can slip it back on, this way you can get back & forth to high school.

Best of Luck

Re: how to take off a serpentine belt

I got it changed, it was just the belt-I mean i knew it was because i would shoot the belt with WD-40 and it would stop until it dried up. The belt i replaced wasnt that old, it was just squeaky for some reason.

May not have been the belt then... You could have been lubing something else with the WD-40 at hte same time as the belt rotated over that part. Unless the squeaking quit now.
