Hypermax installed

I installed my hypermax turbo over the weekend. It was a not too difficult but very time consuming. I then installed 4" straight pipe exiting out behind the tire. It sounds cools but I am sure it will be too loud when I am pulling the trailer, so I will be putting a muffler on. When i finally was able to drive it, some 14 or 15 hours from the start including the exhaust I was all smiles. It makes a huge difference. I even tried pulling our 22' travel trailer and it moves it effortlessly. It was a dream come true, until the blow-by started to get heavy. I am sure the engine was probably on it's last leg anyway and the turbo just helped diagnose what was going to happen very soon if not the next time I made the truck work hard pulling. So now I will be doing a rebuild as well. I will be going to a local place to have it done. What is the break in procedure for a diesel? I hope to be having the motor done this week and be pulling my trailer by easter weekend. Is it possible to tow with a motor that fresh?

Re: Hypermax installed

Most breakin period is recomended to drive the vehicle up to 500 miles (Empty) at varied speeds before pulling any kind of load. Then pull a load with in reason and also vary the speed and no fast takeoff's or try to show the big boys how its done. It will take about 10,000 miles to give it a reasonable breakin. someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.
Just going by what say about a good breakin. Good luck and enjoy your ride. :warmsmile :

Re: Hypermax installed

10,000 is maybe a little much...With the new Chrome Molly rings and things that are out, it shouldnt be that big of a deal, not like it was back in the day. I'd think you should be pretty good to go by 2500-3k miles...Some swear by breaking in a new engine hard. My theory is, break it in like you will drive it.

Re: Hypermax installed

You know those rings arent used to being turboed, you might want to load it down and run it hard to see if they seat up a little. I have bought some granny cars that smoked and had blowby and ran them like I stole it and most times they cleaned up. I would tow with your new engine and keep an eye on temps and such, dont lug it and it will be fine, have it balanced if it comes clear apart, world of difference.

Re: Hypermax installed

It is blowing a heavy oil mist all over the back of the firewall from the grommet that the turbo's oil return goes to. Also the cdr valve and tube to the intake have large amounts of oil in it, you can almost pour it out. When I take of the oil fill cap off it has a lot of blow by coming out, much more than before. Some one told me what might have happened was that the extra cylinder pressure from the turbo may have "collapsed" the rings. He also said that if I get some special cleaner meant for carpets and mist it into the intake very lightly it may wash the carbon off the rings allowing them to come out gain and re seal against the cylinder wall.
Just so everybody knows I do not think that installing the turbo is what caused this. The motor did have some high miles and putting a turbo on probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I do not regret doing it. I really like the truck and will be keeping it so I do not mind spending the money on it if I have to. The install went fairly well and the kit from hypermax is top quality and would recommend it to any one looking to install a turbo. All the information and advice I have recieved from hypermax, "Huff" and other members on the diesel stop has been greatly appreciated.
I can't wait to get my truck back with a new motor and new hypermax turbo. With the 4" straight pipes it sounds awsome.
