I guess I need a 1356 T-case, and a Nice Seat...

With the weird hiss noise, affected by moving the t-case shifter; and the dried goo all over the outside of the t-case...I'm thinking I need a new T-case. Hoping it will also solve the driveline vibration problem at 60-65mph. U-joints didn't do it.

Anyone on the west coast with a cheap known-good 1356 that'll bolt into a 1991 5-spd, let me know.

While I'm at it, I'm also looking for a nice seat to replace this torn-up original 1991.

Hopefully one of the slightly newer super-comfy ones...

One of us probably knows someone who's going up or down I-5 and would like some gas-money...so maybe we can avoid the shipping problem...

thanks!

Re: I guess I need a 1356 T-case, and a Nice Seat...

Richard

I'm tryin to think what could make that "hiss" sound, but can't figure it out.

My 1345 blew a crap a couple weeks ago. I thought the engine was misfiring, but it was the t-case poppping in/out of gear. It didn't happen when I put it in 4x4 low, but in high range, and got progressively worse over about 5 days till it wouldn't move at all anymore.

I pulled it and put in the guts from another one I had here, and it works fine, but now it too has a slight, but noticeable and irritating vibration at about 60mph.

They're not complicated inside, just a bit of a pain to pull and be without the unit for a couple days...

Might be worth yanking it and having a look inside the thing?

Re: I guess I need a 1356 T-case, and a Nice Seat...

thanks for the notes Zigg.

It's pretty much a 'hiss' while driving along, but when I put a bit of forward pressure on the T-case shifter, it starts getting a more 'metallic' sound to it. Not a very clear description, I know...

I guess I mean that it starts to sound more like metal on metal, with that forward pressure. And pulling back on it a bit seems to make the hiss go away, or at least diminish.

What's the diff. between a 1345 and 1356 ??

Are they bolt-in compatible?

Are auto/stick t-cases identical?

Is there an interchange problem with putting an older t-case into a newer truck like a 91 ? I can't remember when the speedo thing changed... '92? 94?

What I'm getting at is, will ANY 1345/1356 I can get my hands on bolt right in? Or do I have to pay attention to year, tranny, etc.. ??

thanks!

Richard

Re: I guess I need a 1356 T-case, and a Nice Seat...

ps: Zigg, weren't you chasing a vibration problem a couple years ago? Where you swapped everything under the sun and still couldn't find it, and it turned out to be the t-case?

or was that someone else?

R.

Re: I guess I need a 1356 T-case, and a Nice Seat...

d9d, I think that they have different tail shaft assemblies and a different type of yoke. But they can be mixed and matched if you have some mech aptitude. Whoever swapped out mine forgot to put in a speedo drive gear and I had to grind a dimple into the output shaft for the gear spring-loaded ball to rest in. My truck was originally a 6.9 w/T-19 w/1345 and P.O swapped in a 7.3 w/E4OD w/1356. It has been a real nitemare trying to get it all figured out. Now I know why he sold it sooooo cheap. $1000.00 She seems happy now, but the test is coming in June/July...trip to Texas/Oklahoma pulling 29' 5th wheel . Re: I guess I need a 1356 T-case, and a Nice Seat...

Is the 1356 stonger than the NP208? Most of the Fords I've owned had the NP TC's, but it seems all the diesel's (and the 460 parts truck I have) have the Borg Warner. Are they interchangable? NP to BW, or C6 to ZF5? Just curious....Got an NP in my Bronco and a spare in the garage, and a BW in the '91. Was wondering if the BW on the parts truck ('86--460--C6) might fit the '91.
