I need help-sending unit problems.

Hi to all again. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Neither one of my fuel gauges work. I bought the truck with them not working, and the fellow that I got the truck from said "don't waste your time trying to swap the sending units- I already did it, and a year later, they don't work". Every time I change the fuel filter, I've got small bits of black plastic (float) sitting at the bottom of the water seperator bowel. I've called napa, auto zone, etc. and no one has them. The ford house will have to order them at 120.00 apiece. He doesn't know what the float material is made out of. If it's brass, it will crack and sink; and if it's plastic, it will break up. Is there a homemade remedy? A beer can filled full with scilicone? A Piece of wood maybe?

Re: I need help-sending unit problems.

I just got through installing a new fuel tank and if I remember right, the float was black plastic. www.JCWhitney.com has all of the parts for your problem and a pretty good diagram thereof.
I would think that the particles your finding in your filter would not come from your sender float. Can't see why it would break up into those small of pieces and pass through the fuel system. Sounds more like you have a grounding problem at the selector switch . Both tanks are connected to this switch. It sits on your frame rail and it has an easy disconnect plug on it. Perhaps some electrical cleaner on the terminals would do the trick.

The sending units for both of the tanks on my 1994 F250 have quit . I am looking at replacing with a capacitance level type sending unit (no moving parts)
from- CENTROID PRODUCTS - Computerized Tank Display - Electronic Senders - capacitive fuel gauges - . What are the gauge resistance specifications for my 1994 F250 .

BTW, what is involved in pulling the rear tank R&R ?

- Thanks

I have not seen a factory sending unit for these truck with a plastic float. All the ones I've seen have metal floats. The bottom of the sender has a rubber fuel pickup/screen that looks like a shower head. It fails very often and will make you run out of fuel at about 1/4 tank once it breaks off the bottom of the sender. It will eventually break up into smaller pieces. This may be some of the garbage you are seening at fuel filter changes.

Getting a new sender will get the gauge working properly, but the pick up will fail again in no time. I replaced my senders with new units and in three months, the pick ups where off and floating in the bottom of the tanks. I replaced them with a piece of Goodyear fuel hose with a "fishmouth" or inverted "V" cut in the bottom of the line so it doesn't suck on the bottom of the tank. They are held on by a small hose clamp.
