i will be joining the old schoolers, intercooler ???s

i will be joining soon. the 03 is listed on craigs list and i am picking up a 90 350 crew 4x4 soon, hopefully tomorrow if the weather clears here. i will miss the power, but not the payments, especially with boy #3 coming soon. momma needs a new minivan. i have been reading up on things to get familiar with the old schools. anyway, i will be adding a turbo as soon as possible and have questions about intercoolers. for those of you who are running intercoolers, what are you using and what turbo system you have. i am particularily interested in those who fabricated theirs.
also for those running stage 1 injectors, are they worth it and where is the best place to get some.
i am sure i will have lots of other questions once it comes home and i start digging in. thanks, gary

Hi ZPD,

I've got the intercooler. Got a take off from Banks-cost about $140 including shipping. I got pipes from ebay~$100.

I have not installed it yet. But this project is looming large. It's almost tow season and need to get it in to keep tabs on the egt's.

I run a Hypermax system. I contacted Huff (he's a member here and does GREAT work) he made custom h-max intake hat for me.

I'm in about $400 so far in parts. I'm excited to get it in, just don't have the time yet.

John

thanks for the reply. how did you get a banks for 140.00. are the pipes off of ebay univerals, would you have cut and reweld to get the right angles. are you planning on running the pipes one on each side such as the superduties. i know that the hypermax intercooler kit runs both pipes along side each other. how do you like your hypermax turbo., did you buy their 3.5 inch exhaust system. i cant remember, does the turbo kit come with the downpipe. what are you running for boost. sorry for all the questions.

these older trucks will be all custom work to fab up anymore verylittle parts are out there for you go with a banks turbo (best power) and do the intercooler up yourself or send it to a muffler shop to have them make you pipes up for the air
I think its similar to where the psd would run it

the stage ones (i dont own) better be worth it for the cost over stock (ive heard good but they seem to be for huge power mostly)

k&n air filters will open it up for that cooler and turbo

thats what i am trying to learn on. i am just getting into these older trucks. there are many out there that have been there and done that. so, instead of trying to be my own personal pioneer, ha ha, i would like to see what others have done to get a direction started. i would love to be able to plop down the 1400 for a connect the dots sytem, but it will be awhile if that was to happen. i am not a fraid to fab, i do it all the time on other things. i am awalking project. how many have used a psd intercooler, whether its from a 7.3 or a 6.0. if they had, did they have a problem with the truck over heating because it restricted to much air to the radiator. the ats intercooler isnt as big and is set down so that air passes through the openings in the bumper of the 92-97s. but my 90 has a solid bumper. will a 92-97 bumper bolt right up? ultimately, my goal is get the power close to a stock 6.0. since that is what i am used to. i dont think 300 horses is terribly unreasonable, without opening up the motor and changing out the internals. if someone know differently let me know.

the bumper you will just have to compare, because i think they are a bit more square on the 90 body style. and i would stay away from k and n filters, had one on a psd and on our suburban and no matter how often and how oiled the element itself was, it just let through too much dirt. i would stick with paper or one of those blue amsoil filters, they look pretty nice and are supposed to filter real good.

another thing i just thought of is how efficient would a large 6.0 intercooler be when only pushing maybe 10#s of boost. and how much lag would create with all that 3 inch piping. as i said before, i am just looking for those that have been there and done that so they could point me to a proven setup.

shooting for 300 hp is reasonable but your gonna need the stage 1 injectors to do it.

also anything more than 10 psi is too much for these motors STOCK.

but my buddy (who got me hooked on diesel motors) has a 1988 7.3 with ats turbo no intercooler and constantly runs his truck at 15psi. but his truck has better head gaskets and head studs and hes been running it like that towing a 5er for about 3 years now with NO problems what so ever. he is looking at intercoolers now i will ask him a few questions for you.
