Id'ing a part on the engine

When removing the vacuum pump from my engine I noticed a sending unit type thing screwed into the houseing where you pour in oil.It is leaking and I would like to replace it,it has a pig tail of 2 wires about 8 inchs long.We ask a couple parts houses about it and cant get the info we need.we would like to replace it.what is it? Sounds like the tach sensor.

In that picture, is it the yellow bolt looking thing just to the right of the oil fill with the yellow wires coming out of it and a black connector on the end?

If that's what you're talking about then yes, it's the tach sensor.

With that said, that's weird it's leaking anything. The oil must be flinging up off the timing gear and getting on it.

Can probably just unscrew it, put some silicone on it and put it back in to get it to stop leaking. Don't put alot of silicone goo on it though, don't want it to drip down on the inside.

That part is the RPM / tach sensor. It is a Ford only item. There is an O-ring on it under the nut part.

If you can confirm that it is leaking there, unplug the wire connector and carefully unscrew it with a 1" wrench (be careful to not damage or twist the wires) and inspect the O-ring for damage. If it is damaged, a NAPA or industrial supply store should be able to get you a O-ring of similar size.

Also note that since your truck has the E4OD, the computer uses the tach sensor as one of the inputs to shift the transmission. The tach sensor fails in time, so you may be best off to replace it so you have a known new, good unit. A bad tach sensor can cause the trans to not work right, and cause torque converter clutch burnup.

Mine leaked where the 2 wires left the body of the sensor, as an ounce of prevention I coated the new one with 3M weatherstripping adhesive at that wire point when I installed it new.
