I'm Back>>>Barely

Most of you know the saga of my Colorado trip. It wasn't over. Upon leaving and heading up to Cheyenne I broke the famous :backoff alternator belt. It looked ok. So since I had to remove every stinkin :Sly belt on it I replaced them all. This was on a Sunday afternoon in a littlew town. NAPA was just about to close and they hung around because the belts that they called for didn't fit and we had to try others.

Back on the road. Load lighter truck running fair :rotflmao not what I would have hoped. Heading through Nebraska and pull into a Petro. I grab the fuel fill and end up putting 45 gal. of gas in. Now what? cookoo So I head to a place that can pump me out and he wants to know why I want to take the gas with me. ;Really uh, because its $145 that's why and he didn't want to buy it off of me. Just use it in his waste oil furnace. RIGHT!!!!

So now I have a 55 gal drum of gas in the back too. DOT should love me! LOL OK I should get some good tail winds now right!? NADA -cuss I'm heading into the hurricane. Winds in the face all of the way through NE. Speed 50-55.
Hit rain in MO through MD. At times I couldn't see the road. Speed as low as 40. Pulling hill on 70 from Wheeling 27 MPH up the hill. Man I am worn out from shifting and keeping my foot screwed down to the floor. My GPS said it was a total of 35 hours of drive time, avg. speed 54 mph. I through the radar detector out the window.

I'm used to a KW with 475 CAT that can pull 90,000+ anywhere you want with the cruise on. I don't know what to do with th truck. I don't want to buy another because of cost, but this is ridiculous.

Re: I'm Back>>>Barely

You're probably doing about as well as can be expected... until you get a turbo, IP rebuild and injectors you're not going to get the power it sounds like you want out of your truck.

I'll sell you mine for $5000.

Re: I'm Back>>>Barely

Every time I read about you and your truck it makes me think something is not right. Fuel mileage only at 7-8 loaded and 10-12 empty. I cna beat that with a stick even with the auto and no O/D. I get closer to 11-13 loaded, granted witha boat or a big load of firtewood, not a 5'er, but still.... and 13-17 empty. You should be getting at least 15-17mpg empty and 9-10 loaded and you shouldn't have to struggle to stay at 65-70 on the flatlands and small hills. Big hills and no turbo means you're going to be slowing down. Have you ever had the timing on this thing checked? And are you sure you have 4.10s and not 4.56s or 4.63s (aftermarket from previous owner)?

Bite the bullit, spend the $300 for the y pipe from Banks and install that turbo. It will do amazing things for that truck.

Re: I'm Back>>>Barely

I know I am always surprised to hear what others say they are getting. I always thought I had 4.56'ers in it wheusing online speed calculators, but when I changed the rear fluid I saw that the rear said 4.10. I also know that when I put the 2 speed in I installed the gear for the speedo at 4.56 and using my friends gps saw that that was wrong. I was going faster than my speedo said.

I have gotten the same milage form when I bought the truck used 1 year old with 14,000 on it. Before my top speed was 70. I have pulled 18,000 down to florida a number of times with a horse trailer and it pulled it like it was empty. That is why I was so surprised at this trip.

The IP & injectors don't have too many miles on them, and Mel times it for me just a few months ago. When I get some money saved up I might just put that turbo on. Its the last thing I have to do.

I will say that the winds on this trip were very strong, and when I was parked next to semi's I was almost as tall.

Re: I'm Back>>>Barely

I would say a turbo is the way into the light, you should be able to get your empty mileage up a bit and get some more power for pulling those big loads. That is a really big load for a NA diesel, they need turbos when you are humping that kind of weight around. I would say for an investment of 1500 (H-Max turbo) and some guages, you will have ALOT more useable power and not have your foot glued on the go pedal. Scotty
