Injection pump removal

Hi...All
I have decided to take the Injection pump in to the local diesel shop to see if it is any good.
I figure this is a good time as I have all of the injectors out and the injection lines removed.
I have managed to lever off the inspection plate on the front of the engine and I have found the 3 tiny bolts that seem to attach the pump to the big old timing gear.
These appear to be very odd looking bolts as they seem to have a 12? point head and the only socket I have that seems to come close to the right size is a 1/4" drive 11/32 6 point socket.
Has anyone dealt with these bolts before and would anyone have any advice on how to deal with them.
Also...is it possible to remove the injection pump without totaly screwing up the timing?
The manual refers to a bolt on the drivers side of the pump (low down) that seems to need to be undone as well.
It also vaguely refers to "scribe lines" that need to be lined up on re-assembly to get the timing right.
It's a little hard to see what is going on as far as timing etc. as the pump is filthy and there are some wires in the way.
Any help would be gratefuly recieved...

Re: Injection pump removal

.......5/16" 12 point is the right size, remove them and the 3 nuts behind by the IP timing mark plus the fast idle solenoid and bracket. I don't know too many shops that will TEST old IPs since it contaminates their test stand. If you want the R&R info for the IP PM me your email addy.

Re: Injection pump removal

Whatever you do... Don't remove the 4 bolts that hold the timing gear cover to the block. If you do the gear will move and it will never start. Pete is correct on the bolt size and also the 9/16th nuts that hold the pump to the cover. They require a special curved wrench for removal. Sears sells one that is very close to fitting but needs some grinding to fit some of the nuts. Before you remove the pump you can "scribe" a line on the gear cover and pump so it can be close to timing when you reinstall it IF and ONLY If it has not been rebuilt or you install another pump. Re: Injection pump removal

the injection pump does NOT require you buying a curved wrench to take it off. just cut on old chinese brand (dont cut a good craftsman or snap-on) 9/16 wrench in half to get the pax and driver side nut off.........Gibson

Re: Injection pump removal

go to my website and click the "IDI Injection Pump Article" link at the top of the page to get a great article written by Mel that has step by step for doing this job.

also, Gibson is right, you don't need a special wrench, just find a shorter one and you can work it down in there to get the bottom nut.
