Intermittent Coolant Leak

Every so often I get a small coolant leak. Now that I think about it, it seems to happen when I plug in the block heater. I don't seem to be losing much coolant; maybe 2 ounces at a time. It runs downs the back side of the radiator and pools a little at the base. Also, one blade of the fan had coolant on it, but no others. It seems like the coolant shot out of the radiator and hit the fan blade. If it were leaking while the fan were turning I think all the baldes would be wet. I think it only happens when the block heater is running. Anybody hear of something like the block heater running only leak?

Thanks Roy

Re: Intermittent Coolant Leak

When the block heater is working the system builds up pressure just like engine running does just not as much. If the hoses are loose during cold weather they will leak, so tighten the upper hose. Ensure the overflow hose is sealed at the rad cap it will leak too when engine is hot running/shutdown.

Re: Intermittent Coolant Leak

Sort of something along the lines of what I was thinking. I will give a turn or two to the clamps and see what happens. I recently replaced the the nasty old clamp on the overflow line with a (believe it or not) heavy zip tie I had handy. Previously, the overflow tank was not getting filled or drained. Worked fine so I left it. So when I'm standing in line at NAPA going "what else do I need" how come I never remember that clamp?

Thanks

Re: Intermittent Coolant Leak

Not sure if you have a new upper hose but make sure the clamp is behind the pizzy little hole they punch to put that little string hanger through.
