I’m having some issues with my IP? It started a couple of weeks ago after I got a tank of diesel with water in it, and started running rough and seemed like maybe I had an air leak in the system I thought it was just the water in the fuel, so changed fuel filter, lift pump added a goldenrod water blocking filter in line before the stock filter, put 2 bottles of Iso-heat in the tank and replaced injector O-rings, caps, & fuel lines. Finally seemed to clear up the sensation of air in the system but it was still blowing blue smoke and acting like a gasser when it’s flooded or running to rich. After I did some research here a couple of days ago and found an old post referring to the advance arm on the IP sticking, I went out & checked. It did not appear to be sticking, lubed it anyway with a couple of drops of ATF (both the arm pivot point and the pin itself). I did turn up the idle screw1/8 of a turn (about 50 RPM) and rotated the IP to the right (clockwise as I was standing in front of the truck) 1 or 2 degrees, that seemed to help but it was still acting “flooded” if the engine was below operating temp. Then yesterday it started acting like fuel was draining back at each shutdown after sitting for 30-60 minutes, requiring a long crank before firing again. I don’t know/understand how the IP’s work so I’m having trouble diagnosing the problem.
I’d like input from anyone on what the problem might be, and if anyone can explain or has a good write up of how the IP works I’d like to know.
The IP was rebuilt less than 20K miles ago, also replaced injectors and GP at the same time. Had the IP and injectors checked about 2 months ago for a separate issue, they checked good.
Is it an option to rebuild the IP myself, and if so where can I get the rebuild kit and instructions.
Thanks for the help from all.
Brent

I would not try and rebuild the pump myself. Soo many possibilities for issues. Try a huge dose of cleaner through it and see if you can get it to clear up. I got water in mine, and hd to change it because the fuel shut off lever was sticking inside the pump and I could not get it to clear up.
If you get it quick, may be able to clean it?

George.... First lets get the idle and stuff like that sorted out. Does the fast idle solenoid work and the timing advance........ check for 12V power at all three connections on the IP with the key on and a cold engine..... If there is power to all three cycle the IP fuel lever once "like stepping on the pedal" did the fast idle solenoid extend to a fast position. If no post back and we can go further. I think you have my email addy contact me if you wish.

Thanks for the response, the issue turned out to be the thermal switch that sets on the top front of the passenger side of the block, the connector had come off of it, I reconnected and wa-la it worked again. Thanks so much for the input.

Here we go again,
got the truck running good on Saturday but never ran it to long then took it to Seward yesterday (260 miles round trip) ran great the whole way then died on me when I backed it into the driveway started right back up, no problem. Started great this morning and ran fine till I shut it down after it had warmed up. During the day if I tried to start it up after 10-15 minutes I would have to crank & crank till it would catch then start, once it was running it would run fine; But if I let it sit for an hour or so it seemed it would start right back up AFTER it had cooled down. It didn’t seem to mater if the truck was parked nose up or down (it acted like there was air in the system but the Schrader valve never gave me anything but fuel all day). The only thing I can think of is the thermal issue with the IP I’ve read about here, but till today I’ve never experienced it (I've been runing this IP for 2 years now). When I had the bad fuel I plumbed in a goldenrod filter between the lift pump and the stock filter head. Could this be restricting the fuel flow that as I understand it, is what cools & lubes the IP? Should I move the goldenrod filter to BEFORE the lift pump? Are there any other possibilities you see from your perspective?
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Brent

I'm leaning toward a bad IP......if it starts cold, but not hot until it cools down again that is a symptom of a worn out IP.
