i have a 94' idi turbo, after the truck sits for an extended period of time (8 hours or so) it wont start. there is fuel coming out of lift pump but nothing out of IP. i just put a new fuel filter on it. any info would help.
Check the return lines on the top of the injectors, the plastic fittings and o-rings dry up and leak air into the system.

What do you mean none coming out of the IP.......... Did you prefill the filter before installation with fuel additive or fresh clean diesel......... fill via the outer ring of holes only. Never use the drainings from an old filter..... If you did not fill the filter then you have introduced air in the injection pump and system........ You could try a complete start...... GPs, foot to floor and crank for 20 seconds......... wait 1-2 minutes and try again.......if it does not start. How good are the batteries....... it must crank over faster than you can count RPMs.
Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.
If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.

the filter had already been bled out with new diesel and the system had been running fine for a 2 weeks, then a couple of days ago and yesterday it wouldnt start after sitting for two days of not having been run, but once i do get it started it runs fine it just takes a lot of cranking or a squirt of ether to get her goin and it only doesnt start after it sits. the batteries are good they're only 2 months old. i didnt see any fuel leaking from the daisy chained return lines on the injectors.

There may not necessarily be fuel leaking out of the return line caps but they can allow air to enter. There is a very small amount of pressure when the engine is running but it may not be enough, in the case of a small leak, to show fuel.

[quote=NCheek;1549282]Replacing the caps, o-rings, and hoses should fix your problem. Midwest Fuel Injection has a kit, but it also includes the copper washers.[quote/]
do you know of any parts stores that might have them on hand or be able to get in a day or two?
Where are you located........ someone may know of a place near you.....
How tight did you make the filter........ requires hand tight plus 1 turn with a filter wrench. Any wet spots on the filter header or base. Did you lube up the new oring and top seal.. is the drain shut.
