Seems as though my ip has a small seep because I see a small amount( in the form of muddy goo) of diesel around the plunger of the pump and in the valley top of the block. Its NOT enough that I am overwhelmed with diesel odor when under the hood though. Also I seem to spend a little more time starting the truck and I believe this is due to the diesel leaking out or air coming in to the system. Fuel economy also seems to have dropped off a bit. My question is wether or not the plunger seal can be repaired in the truck or would I be better off to have a local shop rebuild the whole pump? The pump has about 70k on it but the original injectors have about 155k on them now. Is it time for new injectors as well?

Yep, 'tis time for a rebuilt pump and new injectors. But yer mileage will drop at first because with the new parts it'll come alive and yer gonna be puttin' yer foot in it more . OkieGringo P.S. This time around with the new IP, use PowerService or Standynes IN EVERY TANK OF DIESEL THAT YOU BUY to lubricate the IP and it'll last another 30k - 50k miles LONGER than the last one.
Whats it normally cost to rebuild an IP off one of these maybe 400 bucks? Is it worth it money wise for 100k miles worth of stanadyne or powerservice? I know that stuff isnt cheap so is it even worth the extra money? It would probably be cheaper to pour some new motor oil in the fuel for the extra lubricity. Or even a some ATF that stuff is cheap too. Im not trying to start anything here im just asking questions.
Thanks
Chris
What is the avg. life of an ip and the avg life of injectors?

I would put average life at about 150k miles and they are usually replaced together. As for fuel additive i don't know off any sientific research that says how much an extra life an additive will give a pump or if the cost of the additive out weighs the cost of a pump. I believe some people use ATF i'm not sure how regularly though.

Well, YOU stop using ANY IP lube, and we'll let YOU be the "sientific research" guinea pig. However, you might get "banned" for "Diesel- Slaughter", or "Inhumane Treatment of an IDI", or "Diesel Engine Abuse". And you'll NEVER be allowed to borrow MY truck. Okie would motor oil or ATF work for the summer? I know in the winter its better to run an anti-gel just in case but during the summer if you ran a quart or 2 of new motor oil or ATF would it do the same thing exept for cheaper? Would it hurt anything. The oil should improve mileage because it burns with more BTUs right.

I did some thinking and calculating when I was about to replace my injection pump. My ears were still ringing from when they told me how much a REBUILT pump would be. I was looking at the Stanadyne brochure and it seemed like a good thing to be able to extend the life of my IP using that stuff. The photos of with/without were very convincing.
But then I did the math. I'm sure this is considered heresy but I determined it doesn't make good economic sense for me to put the fuel additive in with every fill up. As yet I haven't bought any but I've contemplated putting it every 3 or 4 months. If if was 50 cents a bottle I'd have a different outlook.

one tank of fuel (17-19gallons) only requires 1 cup of Power Service the bottle is one quart or 1 gallon (depending on size you want) the quart bottle costs $4-$5 and the big botttle cost $15-$16. the small bottle will be equivilent to 4 tanks of fuel. and the big one equels 16 tank fill ups. about $1 per tank on fill up.... its not worth it to not use it.............Gibson
