Looking at an 88 F250 7.3-New to diesels, any advice?

Hello all,

Today I was out near my house and came across an 88 F250 with the 7.3 Diesel for sale. It has 170,500 miles, the ZF 5sp and 2wd which is just what I was looking for. The body has no dents, only rot in the usual places (and a 3 x 5 inch hole in the driver's side floor near the door, which is easily fixed) i.e. the rear fenderwells. It starts right up, no smoke, no nothing. just runs. I think it helps that the owner is a diesel mechanic, and only wants $1,800 for it. Its in better shape than my 89 F150 (Straight 6 with the T-18 4sp) which was hit only a few weeks ago) and there's that motor! Any way, I'm gonna go back and get it. I have a bypass filter wating for something worthwhile to be dropped in. But before I do that, what should I check/change/flush etc? I was going to flush the diff and throw in 3.55's and posi if they're not already in place, along with flushing the cooling system. What are all of those coolant additives that many of you refer to as must adds, and what do they do? Also, it has a mechanical fan and v-belts. Is there a kit for converting the belt system to a serpentine one, and is it advisable to yank the mechanical fan for a dual electric setup? I've put electric fans on every gas truck I've owned with very positive cooling and MPG returns. Also, can I use Biodiesel in this motor without modification? Cheers in advance for any advice.

Cheers,
D.H

The factory fan is a clutch type, there is no need to remove it. It only locks up when needed for cooling.

The coolant additive makes a sacrificial coating on the inside of the motor to prevent damage from cavitation (literally vacuum bubbles exploding). Cavitation damage eats at the iron molecules at a time until holes develop through the cylinder walls. Cavitation is unique to diesels because of their high cylinder pressures.

Thanks for the reply. What's the service interval for coolant changes?

Magic word is GAS.........diesels love heat and operate best near the top of the range. Many have tried to replace the clutch fan with electrics only to go back later........

Test the clutch fan with my test on my gallery......

Ask the PO what SCAs and Coolant he used, as a diesel mech, he if anybody would/should be using SCAs and correct coolants.....
