Hey guys, another question. please bear with me. ive never owned a diesel before and im paranoid. the reason for this is my toyota mr2 turbo knocks a little upon start up, so now every noise scares the hell out of me in any vehicle. anyway, tonight i had the thing plugged in for about 2 or 3 hours since my gp's are shot, and its below 30 right now. this literally just happened btw, and it started, rattled like hell for like 5 seconds and died. i mean RATTLED. loud loud noise, then i restarted it and it did it again for a few seconds and smoothed out. what was it? bearings? and i had tried to start it right before i plugged it in, and nothing. is it normal or am i an idiot and worrying too much? again, im sorry for so many questions guys but i know nothing about them except that theyre relaible as everything and theyre expensive as hell to fix.

Im thinking white or red.
I dont worry about how much weight my truck will pull, I worry about how much it'll stop.
Cold and a diesel with extra fuel from a previous start attempt can cause some nasty noises. You are setting the fast idle correct..... key on press foot pedal wait for GPs then start. You can also keep your foot on the pedal slightly to increase rpms or feather the fuel..

Without the GP's working, you could have some raw fuel in the precups, GP heat helps to vaporize the fuel, the GP's keep cycling ON/OFF for a while even after started. This happens, especially if the injector spray is not atomized real well. That's my theory.

A few seconds after mine starts up cold it will start to rattle some and if I cycle the manual GPs for 2-3 seconds I can hear it fade away. Usually I do that a couple three times total depending on how cold it is outside.
Sometimes I think the rattle is from a slower burn so you get more noise out the exhaust, but sometimes I think it's from leftover diesel in the cylinder that pre-ignites on the next compression stroke before the moment it's meant to when the injector pops.
