Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

Ok for boost numbers I am not sure because I havent attached the line to the gauge yet...I am going to go do that now and see what I can get. I know for a fact though that the turbo isn't seized because you can hear it very well since there is only a down pipe on it right now...should I turn down my IP some or what??? You said too much fuel I thought after a certain point it wouldnt do nothing except blow black smoke but it wouldnt reduce power??? If someone has the time to give me a call I would appreciate it because I am going to be away from the computer...it is 2546880043...thanks.

Will check back in a while

Daniel

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

Go hook up your boost gauge, i don't think you need to turn down the pump unless you have the screw bottomed out, i don't think to much fuel is the right wording, i would say not enough air, to much fuel or not enough air wouldn't cause a loss of power like your saying.

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

I remember a post a while back where the rubber connector between the impeller housing and the air intake was old and weak. And when the turbo spooled up it sucked the boot shut =no air =lotsa black smoke. Also, if you've left the ground wire to the GP controller off when you moved the controller or if a wire behind the HOT exhaust side of the turbo has been burned IT WON'T START . Check the wiring carefully. It worked before YOU messed with it. BajaGringo

Check the waste gate if it has on. Stuck open? Good luck.

What are those boost numbers? Did you check to make sure your lines/wiring is safely away from the hot parts of the turbo? Anything new?

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

I was waiting for Dan to chime back in, but he has everything set up correctly. I called him and we worked through the engine. Basically, he had everything set up correct but he was not seeing boost because he never drove the truck hard enough to need boost (non wastegated Banks). Once he finally was able to drive it hard, he got 5PSI at about 70Mph, I told him, if he strapped a load on his back and pulled a good hill, he will probably see 10-12 psi pretty easy. He was having a little bit of trouble with the idle and the truck dieing out, also had some small electrical problem. I think he is tinkering with it and fixing the little stuff. But overall, he got it handled real well and just didn't see boost cause he was working the truck hard enough.. So wish him luck, Dan sounds like a pretty great guy to have around. Alot of diesel driving friends down in Texas. Scotty

Well how can that be? He said it had about half the power after the turbo install, was it just his imagination?

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

I think he was just mad because he spent so much timimg bolting up the system and didn't see any boost. I believe he was seeing RED. Anyhow, After he worked the truck a little and saw some boost, he discovered a few little things he needed to fix. I am waiting to hear back from him, about the outcome of the truck. Scotty

Like I said I tried it with the pump set a little higher than stock and now at max and no differance really.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do we read into this maxed out (bottomed out) with no turn back for safety and no damage to the pump.

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

Pete, I told him to back it out just a hair, so he doesn't hurt anything. I am hoping to see a post from him once he gets the truck back under control. I think he just has a bunch of little things to take care of. I know how it happens, all the little things get you down, just told him to walk away from the truck for a day, then come back and usually the problems seem alot easier. Scotty

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

Sounds like he has the same Earlier Banks turbo that I have? Was it the square box non-wastegated?
He should be able to see more boost than that (5lbs) going up a hill without a load. I can get 9 to 10 lbs unloaded if I floor it up a hill. 5 lbs sounds light to me.
I also just replaced my Rubber Air Inlet Compressor Elbow which was collapsing at higher boost due to it being too pliable from age. The newer one is way harder.
Sounds like he is having air restrictions to the turbo?

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

He may be having a problem with the inlet hose, but as far as getting the main part of the turbo set up, he is good. I think he still has a little tweaking and getting a new hose may be part of it. But other than that, at least he is running and able to see boost. After that, it is all gravy. Scotty

Re: Major problem with my BANKS turbo...need help!

Well I thank everyone for all their help. I still have not got anymore than 5 lbs...yesterday I took it down the highway hammered it and got 5 lbs...let off and it died. Don't know the problem. I think the clutch is now fried though from the smell and the fact that when well pull started it again it took along ways of pulling before it turned over and when it started it ran like crap real bad black smoke and slow to rev so I shut her down and now shes forsale. I am in college and don't have the time money or effort to fix her. My loss is your gain...it is on ebay now item 4537784677...Thanks again
