manual transmission lubricant

is there any valid reason not to use gear oil in a manual tranmission instead of atf fluid,i still have some lightweight nonslip redline synthetic that i used in a t-19 4spd it shifted great with that fluid,i presently have a ford ranger, ford f150, ford f250 and none of them shift as smoth as my 85f250 did. the synthetic oil was not as slippery so it went into gear easily.

ZF folks recommend Synthetic ATF...... Your call as to what YOU use in the trans. If it worked before why would it not work now?????

having searched through the archives i found Redline-mtl should work as good or better than atf in a manual tranny.

Mazama,

For what it's worth, I've been running Redline MTL in my ZF for over 300K miles without any problems. I don't know if it shifts better, but it still shifts the same as when I got the truck new in 1992.
