Question marinising 7.3 idi

i would like to convert my petrol v8 5.7litre mercruiser to a 1992 7.3 litre idi ford v8 diesel. will my marine manifolds bolt straight on? will the flywheels match up as the diesel is currently on a fire dept automatic ambulance. i am assuming the blocks are the same??

Welcome to the Diesel Stop

The 7.3 IDI is NOT going to fit in place of the 5.7 mercruiser.

First off the mercruiser is the same thing as a small block chevy 350 and the IDI is like a big block 444. Besides the manifolds and flywheels being way different, there is the issue of weight.

The Merc weighs in at about 850 Lbs. The IDI is about 950 Lbs. 100 lbs may not seem like much, but in the back end of a boat, it may make the transom sink too low and take on water.

With all that said, the 7.3 IDI was supposedly a fairly common marine motor, and I've actually seen listings for whole boats with them in them pretty cheap. If you could find a marine salvage with motors they might have one for you. Even the injection pump differs somehow.
