Mechanical lift pump

I just bought a new lift pump for my truck. However, the pump lever is not the same as the pump I took out of my truck. My truck is a 92' so that is what I bought it for. The spec tag on my engine says a 91. Are the pumps for the 91's different?

Re: Mechanical lift pump

you might want to double check with Ken to make sure the lift pump will do the job. I think somewhere along the lines they changed the design. Do the spots that would ride on the cam look like there at the same place?

Re: Mechanical lift pump

The old pump lever was riding on the cam at about the 7o'clock position. The lever on the new pump is the same length but looks like it would ride at about 5o'clock. I didn't try to install it incase I had to return it. It threw me for a loop because the levers are not bent the same.

Re: Mechanical lift pump

I haven't canged mine, but I believe some other people have said about the design change and you probably have the right one.

Re: Mechanical lift pump

The lift pump will work, the newer almost strait arm is the upgraded pump. There should have been som info on a sheet in the box that stated:

WARNING

This fuel pump must be installed only at the low position of actuator cam.

If the pump is installed at any other position than low cam, the pump will be ruined, the engine will stall and damage may result.

Incorrect installation will loosen the pivot pin and allows the pin and lever to come out of the pump and drop into the oil pan. This can occur immediately or after several hundred miles. This type of failure is not covered by warranty.

To ensure that the cam is at low position, it is necessary to use a mirror and a remote starter switch. Observe the cam through the mounting port and bump the engine around until a one (1) inch wide machine surface is observed. This is low position of the cam. Now complete normal fuel pump installation.

Re: Mechanical lift pump

Yep slight design change / updated pump levers on the new ones... Not a big deal still does the same job... Just make sure that when you install the new one that the pump drive lobe on the end of the cam is in the UP position so that you don't accidentally get the lever on top of the lobe which will/can break the lever off.

Just insert it with the lever pointing towards the ground the best you can so that you insure that it rides on the bottom of the lobe and you'll be fine.

Re: Mechanical lift pump

Well, I did what you guys said about putting the pump in with the flat of the cam towards the lever. It is actually easy to see with a mirror after I removed the vac pump. I only had to bump the starter once to get where I needed it. I hooked everything back up and it started up and ran again. Must have done it right! Then I moved to the next project, IP pump and injector removal. (see other post)
