Metal shield between engine and manual tranny?

There is a metal shield that goes between the engine and the transmission on trucks with a standard transmission.
Does anyone know if the shield is necessary?
What is it's function?
Does anyone know how thick the material is?
I'm not having much luck locating one. If I knew the material thickness I would just make one at the shop. It may be fine without it but I'm concerened that the thickness may throw off the clutch travel and it may not have propper pressure or release.
I am converting from an automatic to a manual and want to make sure that I have all ofthe parts needed before I start putting it back together.

No, you dont really need it. Besides if you are converting to standard tranns the go with the luk flyweel (12") or the luky mod One member Luky_larue made it using the stock dfw and convert it to sfw.

It is an inspection cover and if it was my truck, I would want it in place. As the previous poster said, you don't need it.

I disagree that it is not needed. Not only does it keep water etc out of the clutch assembly, but it is a spacer that is designed into the system's dimensions.

While it "may" technically work without, it isn't right.

Look at it this way, the automakers have spent millions of dollars installing the metal spacers. They wouldn't have done that if they weren't necessary.
