I noticed that the air intake on my 92 7.3 is very restrictive, so i am fabricating a 4 inch diameter pipe running fro the air intake up through the front of the hood, just like ram air. Heres my question, could i just take off the old air filter setup and just run one filter on the end of the new air intake tube that I am making, or should I keep the old filter as well as the new one. I know that the new on the front of the hood is going to eats alot of carp, bugs, dust etc.

Sure seemed like it to me, I can smoke the dual wheels now a little. A 200 mile trip got me 17MPG, thought that was pretty good. Will check the MPG after tune up ext week end.
thanks, i am going to try and build one similar to your but mine is coming right out if the hood like ram air, i am cutting a hole in the hood and running the filter right up on top of the hood

Make sure to post pictures when you're done. I just got my truck a couple weeks ago and am nearing mod time

Id be afraid to have any intake that is higher than the intake manifold. It doesn't take alot of water in the cylinder during the compression stroke to hydro lock the motor which could lead to bent puchrods, damage to heads, connecting rods, and crank.
The clearance from piston to head is the width of the head gasket, around ".070 IIRC.
Its easy for water to travel down a cowl intake, but harder if it has to climb.
