More boost?

I just put a turbo on my 92 7.3L off of a 94. I put a boost gauge on and at full throttle at 2000 rpm im only gettin 4-5 psi of boost. Is this the normal amount of boost? Is there any way to turn up the boost so that it is higher or kicks in sooner? any info would be a great help.
thanks

Re: More boost?

Need more info, what kind of turbo, how hard were you working the engine, well, we need to know everything about the truck, what condition your IP and Injectors are in. Alot of variables to just guess at. Scotty

Re: More boost?

The turbo is a stock Garrett off of a 93 Ford 7.3L
The truck was empty and at Full throttle and 2000 rpm i have about only 4-5 psi boost. If i get up around 2500-3000 i get more boost but it seems pretty late for the turbo to be spooling up. Im in Canada so i am in km but the truck has 300,000km. Didn't burn any oil or leak any before turbo and i haven't lost any since. Bought it off my dad and he bought it new in 92. As far as injection pump and injectors I know they are fairly old and probably due but i can;t afford it at this time.

Re: More boost?

If you are unloaded and cruising at 2000RPMS and seeing 4-5lbs of boost, you are probably about perfect. Put the truck in a big hill and put it to the floor and see what kind of boost you are making then. You should be shooting for about 13psi. If you can make 13psi and keep your EGT's pre turbo under 1200* you probably have a very strong running truck. You are not going to see a whole lot of boost until you really need it. The trucks unloaded traveling on flat ground will not need a whole lot of extra power, now strap some weight on the truck and pull the smae roads, you should see your boost increase enough to keep up speed. Re: More boost?

yeah when im just cruising on level ground at highway speed i have no boost according to my gauge.then i put my foot on it and it starts climbing. if im towing do i have to run around 2500rpm to get the boost or will it boost more at lower rpm when im loaded?
also what is the threaded rod on the passanger side of the turbo for? some sort of adjustment it appears.

Re: More boost?

The threaded rod is the boost adjustment. Shorten the rod for more boost. Also did you increase the fuel when you installed the turbo? More fuel will also change boost numbers. Also make sure the air filter is clean!

When adjusting the rod be careful not to break it. There are some indentations on the rod that they crip it with so that it will not back out. Drill those out, unthread the rod (count # of turns) place a nut on the rod. Replace rod and adjust. IF I remember right it is about 3 turns in for 1 PSI. Do not over do it. You will develop more boost working hard, than you will empty. Overboost can damage lots of things. I run mine right at 10PSI loaded. That seems to be good and safe for me. I got to have the truck last as well as perform.

Re: More boost?

Mine can pull 13psi unloaded, but you have to really motivate it to get that high...also EGTs only start touching 1100 max...so it's all good.
When I pull about 8-9k boost is about 8psi cruising at 65, never sees dangerous EGTs or boost. I've heard over 13psi is bad, and it never sees anything more than 7 unloaded unless I am trying to see how much it can get. Driving a constant 60mph my boost reads between 1 and 2psi and EGTs run about 525-550 depending on the weather.
