I have been trying to find the cause for an unpleasant sound coming off from the engine compartment... Sounds like something vibrating against something, but there is nothing loose anywhere I can possibly find.
I have been searching the cause for several hours now and all I can think of right now is the motor mounts.
The "noise" comes on around 1000rpm and it's really loud.... The truck now has almost 194 000miles on the clock, could the motor mounts be the cause?
Any ideas`?
Most sounds other than a good running diesel engine are unpleasant... can you be a little more specific. Is it a knock, a rattle, does it only happen if forward gear or reverse too. To check motor mounts I usually have the hood open and torque up the engine with the brakes on..... any abnormal lifting of the motor will be seen in forward and reverse.

Also check the cab to downpipe clearance, your cab mounts could be toast.

It's like a rattling sound and it happens in forward and reverse also, everytime the time rpm's are around 1000rpm.
The downpipe has clearance though.
This video demonstrates me doing a cold start at -15C without a block heater being attached....
Some erratic idle at the start of the video, then I'll be keeping the rpm's close to 1000 to demonstrate the annyoing sound I'm trying to "delete" here....
Auto trans flex plate! Remove inspection cover and check.

i watched the video and noticed that it takes some time for the oil pressure to build up also when the rpm drops below 1000 your volt meter drops.the truck sure make a rough sound after it starts
Sounds like it's in the exhaust. RPM related drone almost. Like a loose pipe inside the muffler.

My truck had that sort of noise on one camping trip. I thought it was wheel bearings as it only happend when I made a right turn under heavy load (trailer attached), and upon deceleraton ( I had just replaced ball joints and repacked bearings).
When I got home I decided to investigate further and found that when I moved the tranny dipstick tube I moved the DP and it was hitting on the cab when I applied a good torque to the engine. I repositioned the DP and it has never made that noise again, including an 8500 mile trip.

agreed, I'd be having someone hold it at 1000 rpm for me and sticking my head under the cab to listen where the noise is, might see your tailpipe shaking to beat all if a hanger broke off

It's not from exhaust... the exhaust system is just replaced, new piping, new muffler and everything tightly in place. And the downpipe being in a correct position.
