Motor Oil???

I went up to my local auto parts store to pick up some oil for the old beast. This truck, and diesels, are new to me so i checked the owners manual. It calls for an oil that meets SG/CE standards ( i think that's right). I couldnt find any the meet both, even on the ones that were specifically for diesels. Have the standards changed?

Re: Motor Oil???

You can get a few different oils at Walmart or Kragen or even NAPA. Shell Rotella T 15-40, Rotella T Synthetic 5-40, Chevron Delo 400 15-40, Castrol Heavy Duty 15-40, Mobil 1 Synthetic 5-40, and probably a few others. Walmart has all of these oils, and they also have the FL1995 PSD oil filter that can be used on all IDI's. Adds about a quart of oil, so a little more capacity and flitering. Walmart Charges about 7.00 per gallon for Rotella T 15-40 and about 10.00 for a FL1995 filter. I think all of those oils are CH-SG rated oils. The CH is the important part. So CH, CI or anything higher is fine for our trucks. Hope this helps. Scotty

Re: Motor Oil???

Thanks for the compliment, good luck with the oil change, pretty easy. Might be cheaper to get it from Wal-Mart, good prices and they have the Motorcraft filters. Probably buy all the stuff you need for 30.00 or so. Scotty

Actually, these trucks call for a dual rated oil. Must be rated for both C-whatever and S-whatever. Almost any 15w-40 diesel engine oil you find today is going to carry that, however....

When looking at types of oil keep in mind that most of these classifications are retroactive. I have here a bottle of Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 and it is CI-4/SL but those letters are higher than CE/SG so it will work in place of those ratings as well.

Re: Motor Oil???

Wally world doesn't carry the oil filter anymore. Seems they and Ford couldn't agree on a price. In other words, Walmart couldn't bend Ford over for the price they demanded.

Go to Napa and get a Napa Gold 1747 (I believe that's the right number)

Re: Motor Oil???

Wal-mart has just started stocking Motorcraft again. I was in three different Wal-Marts in the past week and all three of them have a section within the store of nothing but Motorcraft filters. It is much more elaborate than they were before. They have Motorcraft vehicle filter ID sheets and everything. They are back. Scotty

Re: Motor Oil???

Dude, my wal-mart doesn't run Motorcraft anymore, so I have to find it elsewhere. As for a good oil, my dad works right across the street from a tow company that uses Shell Rotella 15w-40 in all their diesel engines. Also, my dad, his dad, and as far back as the family goes on diesel's has run shell rotella 15w-40. So that's what I run too.

Re: Motor Oil???

Agreed, I buy my Rotella in 5 gallon buckets, now that I have 2 IDI's.

It's the only thing I'll dump in um.

Re: Motor Oil???

Basically if you buy motor oil made for the "big trucks" it has the proper detergent package for soot suspension that our diesels need.

Rotella, Delo, etc. IMO, just because an oil is "diesel rated" does not mean it is as good as a diesel specific oil.
