How does it start? Does it fire up straight away? Or, does it take longer than it once did? I'm hoping that you are having an air problem, or your glow plugs are failing. To test your glow plugs, get a test light and clamp it on to the positive battery terminal. Unplug the connectors from the glow plugs and touch the test light probe to the tip of each glow plug. If the test light illuminates, the glow plug is good. No light, no good.
To check for air, depress the shraeder valve (thing that looks like a tire valve stem) on the fuel filter header. Also, look for any fuel leaking on the engine. Check the fuel filter, lift pump, injector pump, injectors, hard lines and the return lines. The return lines, o-rings and plastic caps are usually the culprit when air leaks are an issue. Let us know what you find.
sounds like air is seeping into the fuel system, most the time its either plastic injector Ts or the return lines. On the Ts they have rubber o rings that seal the plastic ts. Or maybe the fuel filter isnt seated or sealed right.

Do you have any maintenance history on your truck? Has the injection pump, lift pump, or the injectors been changed at any time? I would suggest changing the return lines now and see if that helps. If it doesn't help, then we look to other possibilities. You can purchase the return line kit online at www.dieselpage.com It's about $25. Tim
You can try pouring some Power Service, Stanadyne or Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel tanks. Pour a good amount in. Double or triple the amount recommended.

My 7.3l never smocked until the ip was turned up. No white or black smocke.
Now after the turbo and ip IT really DOES
If it is white smocke it could very well be air on the fuel system as the guys have been saying.
Exekiel.

I have a 6.9 and a 7.3 and the 6.9 smokes quite a bit. I had the timing set and the smoke was reduced somewhat. I know the pump is turned up, because I replaced the IP and had it turned up with the rebuild when I installed an old style banks turbo. I think it smokes mostly because of the turned up fuel injection pump. It takes a second or two for the boost to build and use all that fuel, causing smoke in the interim.
If the body was not a rust bucket, this would be my favorite truck. I still drive it often and it is a great truck.
