hey all,
My van has been at the dealer for three weeks with a knock.I brought to them 1500 miles ago and they said the diagnosis was bad lifter, they replaced the lifter and its still knocking so i brought it back 3 weeks ago. Now they say that a compression test wont tell me anything and that only taking the engine apart will tell. They are trying to sell me an aftermarket engine installed at 8400 haha. They also say that to ford the idi is now obsolete. any suggestions
thanks

Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
ya--get away from that no clue dealer--could be injector bad--as in firing toooo early--could be bad lifter, or pushrod out--all of which doesnt require teardown of engine--

Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
yeah no doubt they are lame, the reason its back there is beacause they screwed up the first time and they said they want to make it right. Will a compression test tell me what i need to know?

Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
That's the problem with mechanics these days. If the computer doesn't tell them what the problem is, they are clueless and throw parts at it.
Isolate which cylinder the problem is in by cracking teh injector nuts one by one (with engine running) until the knocking goes away. When it does, you're at the right cylinder. Next you have to see if it is a injector or bearing problem. Swap the injector for a known good one from another cylinder. If the problem moves, then it's an injector. If it stays, it is a bearing or piston pin problem.
If cracking the injector nuts does not effect the noise, then it is a non-combustion related problem, i.e. valve, piston interference etc.

Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
Did it ever exhibit a lack of oil pressure? It also depends on the type of knok, but as stated, loosening the injector lines will help isolate which cylinder, even if it is a mechanical failure, it will change the sound of it. IDI may be obsolete to Ford, but IH still supports it just fine... sounds like they just don't want to deal with it. If nothing more take it to an IH shop, or a diesel shop, many dealers don't know these engines anyway, the new guys in the shop don't know what to do with them. Like stated, if the computer doesn't tell them, they don't know. They seem to forget there is still a motor under all that. Sad part is, I went to tech school with many of them... I get kinda touchy when they tell someone that they need to plug in to the computer for an obvious mechanical problem...

Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
on another note, at the local International Dealer, the owner has three old IDI's in the back he drives daily.
One is a small tow truck an f350 with a 7.3 IDI in it.
their tool truck/service truck is an f450 with a 7.3 IDI.
and the old man's personal vehicle has a 6.9 in it.
I trust them, and at least they keep the old parts in stock :-)

My 7.3 was running rough with a lot of white smoke and a funny knocking noise. Turned out it had a bad valve (worn guides, known problem with the 7.3) Compression test pinpointed the problem. You never know....
Sorry to all the loyal 7.3 guys, but I traded my '91 7.3 in on a 2002 F250 Ex cab V10 4x4. SCT Xcalibrator2 with tunes by Powerplay Performance. 285/75/16 Toyo M/T's. Took a long time to get used to the ping-pop of a cooling catalytic converter...LOL.

86 F350 Cab&Chassis with a dump bed. 2wd 6.9 and 4 spd tranny. No mods to engine.
Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
Very ugly! Many dealers with young technicians are helpless against an IDI in a pickup. In a van, I can only imagine their inability to cope. Kind of like an inept computer repair person who wants to format your hard drive, rather than fix the problem. Take a new engine and call me in the morning. Re: need advice on engine diagnosis with the dealer
I know what you mean, I had to have one injector replaced while traveling and the Technician said with 28000 lbs fuel pressure thats the reason the injector sprung a leak, I said you are talking about a PowerStroke and he said they are all that way, I said thank you and left.
