Ok, I've put it off as long as possible (over a year now!), but I really need to sell my IDI in my signature. Here's the problem - when I got my powerstroke I stopped driving the IDI because it was making a chuffing sound out the exhaust, and it made me nervous about dropping a valve. However, it was still pulling strong at that time. In fact, it wasn't long before I quit driving it that I towed a trailer weighing in close to 10,000lbs and it pulled it great.
Tonight I finally pulled the valve cover on the driver's side, which seemed to be where I was hearing the chuff. Sure enough there are weird splatter marks around the exhaust valve for the front cylinder, and I can easily wobble the valve stem and spring from side to side. Doh!
I really have almost no spare time right now to yank the heads on this thing - and it just doesn't sound like fun anyway! So, should I try to sell it as is (of course explaining the valve problem!) or would it bring significantly more if I do the valves and guides??
The truck is in great shape otherwise, not even a ding on the body, although the original paint is getting chalky beyond buffing. The engine only has about 130,000 miles on it as I remember, but I'll have to check my notes from the tranny swap to be sure since I had to go to a newer stle speedo at the time. This is the one with the 6 speed ZF, hypermax turbo, PSD intercooler, ambulance disc brake dually rear, etc as described in the signature. Also, looks pretty much the same - probably less than 20k miles on it since the photos in the sig!
How would you sell this? Would you fix it?
Thank you,
Jason

Very nice truck there friend...... tough call to fix or not....
If your in no hurry to sell, I would yank the engine and fix it, mine sat for several months while repairing my heads etc.
What would be the going price for that truck in good running order...

I need to get as much for the truck as I can, but I have no idea what IDI's bring any more. The truck is in extremely nice shape since it's always been in the south and never seen salt that I know of. No rust and never having the slightest bodywork done... And, I have no idea how the modifications I've done like the 6 speed and rear end affect the value. I would think they would help with an IDI junkie... It also is going to come with the original rear axle, driveshaft, and wheels, and a Leer painted to match cap.
My personal belief is that a truck with it's mileage and capabilities should be worth $5000. Factor in the valve problem and I'm not sure where it would end up. Does anyone know what it costs to have a shop do the valve repair? Can't be cheap to yank heads that big! I suppose I should just fix it, but with a 22 month old, 6 week old, and trying to get a business off the ground it sure seems doubtful about getting to it!
Oh - I liked the Lund flares as a way to just cover the extra wheel on the dually without chopping up my bed. A few screws into the wheel well and that was it. So, they can be removed with virtually no sign that they were on there.

Yeah, that pickup is pretty sharp...I say fix the heads if its less than $1500 if not sell it as is and move on. You may have to sit on it for awhile to find that special buyer that has been looking for a truck like this.
But, Ya win some and lose some....good luck...
