Need help!!!

Hi guys,

I have a 89 ford tow truck (flatbed) and I'm having problems with it. I was on my way to pick up some cars and the truck just accelerate like crazy and I couldn't bring back to normal idle, I stopped her using 5th gear.

Now the truck starts really missing and with smoke from exhaust, If I leave it alone, it would stay idle but missing and some knocking but once I press gas pedal the rpm goes up like crazy and the only way to shut it down is by putting into gear.

I replaced the pump on top I guess it's called injector pump and still same issue. I've noticed in the exhaust there is either oil or fuel ( I cannot tell) and also on the passenger side underneath there was oil or fuel leaking on top of the exhaust.

What it could be the problem this time???
Please help!!!

Re: Need help!!!

Also I forgot, the engine light is on and the oil indicator is crazy moving all over the place but if I press the gas a little it will go away and the oil gauge will stabilize

Re: Need help!!!

Maybe it is sucking oil up into the intake through the CDR, or maybe the lift pump down on the side of the block is leaking diesel into the oilpan and it's sucking that up through the intake. I'd check your air filter and intake for obstructions/mouse nests/rags forgotten, and check the oil to make sure it's not overfull. Either thing can make it more likely to push oil mist up through the CDR and the engine will burn it.

Re: Need help!!!

Did you replace the pump or have it rebuilt? There is a wrong way to put a cover back on that will cause a runaway. It HAS to be the pump, else it would run away without you pressing the throttle.

My thoughts: "Now the truck starts really missing and with smoke from exhaust," Running rich, injection pump "I press gas pedal the rpm goes up like crazy" once again, injection pump "I've noticed in the exhaust there is either oil or fuel" If it is unburnt fuel, running very rich, injection pump. "passenger side underneath there was oil or fuel leaking on top of the exhaust." unrelated leak.

All advice worth what you paid for it, hope you get back to making a dollar with your truck soon. Good luck!

Re: Need help!!!

Check my gallery for the pic of the injector line attachment to the IP..... ensure there are no lines in the wrong place. The fuel pump and oil level checks are vgood suggestions....

Also check the accellerator cable that the return springs have full tension, there is on occasion a broken slide (red) on the end of the cable that can jam.

You were right, the red part of the cable was broken, thanks a lot, I replaced it and that part is fixed, now the smoke still coming out thru exhaust, sometimes less but always there, you think I need new injectors???, I still hear some knocking like when too much fuel is been delivered...

Also the engine light is on until I press the gas and the oil needle goes crazy until I press the gas, you know where the oil pump is???

Re: Need help!!!

When you replaced your IP, did you pull the timing gear and case off? If you did, maybe your timing is off a tooth or two.

No, I aligned the gear pin with a mark I made and just pull out the pump with the lines and all..

Re: Need help!!!

Also just for the heck of it I disconnected the source line (fuel) and attached a gallon of fuel just to see if it was bad diesel and the smoke was almost gone, I did this after my friend who works for uhaul told me that he added a quart of engine oil to the fuel tank apparently to clean the injectors, don't know if is true or not.

Re: Need help!!!

a qt of oil to clean the injectors?????? that was brilliant--as it will do nothing---stanadyne makes stuff you can add to the tank--and it will clean the injectors--that oil he put in will make it smoke--

Re: Need help!!!

I think you found the problem estirpe ...friends with little or no knowledge of how to treat a diesel. The oil would cause excess engine speed and be hard to shut down due to it burns hotter than diesel does. Best to drain the tank with the oil and stroke that up to a lesson learned.......

Re: Need help!!!

You probably still have oil in the injection pump. How long did you let it run?
