I have my dad's old 1991 7.3L IDI that has not run in about 6 years. We parked it when it became hard to crank. Eventually we couldn't get it crank at all. I've been working on for several months now and still can not get it to start.
What I have done so far:
*2 of the largest new batteries I could stick under the hood (950 cranking amps).
*New positive battery cable.
*Rebuilt Autozone Starter (the old starter did not seem like it was spinning the engine over fast enough).
*New Wellman glowplugs (all the old glowplugs were bad, including several swollen Autolites).
*Bypass glow plug controller to push-button set up in cab.
*New fuel return lines, caps, and o-rings on tops of injectors (this was a problem with it losing prime, as all these parts were very deteriorated.) The new caps "snapped" in place over the o-rings and everything felt and looks very good.
*New fuel filter with fuel.
* All injector lines cracked at injectors. Several squirt diesel 4-6 inches in the air. Some just modestly squirt diesel out at the nut. All are squirting diesel though.
The fuel is old and kind of amber colored but it is clean and smells like diesel. No water or algea noticed.
The truck still will not start. It does not seem like it is bleeding back. I can crack the injector nuts and get diesel out immediately. I can not think of what else it could be or what else I can do. I can squirt a little either into the intake and it will hit on it but it will never come close to cranking.
The only other thing I could think of are the injectors are bad, or the injection pump is not pumping enough fuel pressure to open the injectors, or both. I hope this is not the case, as I have already spent enough on this thing only to still result in a no-start situation. Im not sure I want to throw more money at this thing and may just cut my losses and sell this thing as-is. If anyone else has any insight, advice or suggestions please let me know. Thanks!
