New heart to an old horse.

I have a '91 With a crap cab and bed, sketchy E4OD and tires about to need replacement.

I have the opportunity to buy a 1950 F5 that will be nearly free but the owner wants the Flathead out of it. I was thinking about putting the the 7.3IDI into this truck which has the T98 Granny Topper in it. Has anyone done or heard of this being done? Adapter for SAE3? Etc.. I am a mechanic but this would be new terretory for me.

I think the F5 would be cool as crap with the International in it and the torque/HP is much better than the orginal flathead V-8 337. 30 more hp and nearly double the torque.

Well, obviously anything is doable, but would it be feasible or practical? How will the front suspension handle the extra weight of the 7.3l? How about the rearend, for that manner? Is there enough frontal area to install an adequate radiator? Hood clearance?

I'd get a tape measure and start getting dimensions from both trucks framerail width, firewall to radiator, framerail to suspension at rest & compressed (to calculate oil pan clearance), etc. A more modern transmission like the NP435 or ZF will be able to handle the engine's torque, whether the T98 can is up in the air. But with a transmission swap you may run into body clearance issues.

Like posted above, I don't think ANY of the running gear would hold up. I think those old flatheads were 85 or 95HP. A friend here that owns a local diesel repair shop is going to do something similar with a '54 or '55 but he's going with a complete aftermarket tilt front end which will allow for plenty of room under the hood, a Cummins engine and all modern running gear and suspension. Another thing some guys don't consider, after an engine swap is done there still has to be enough access under the hood around the engine to work on it.

All good points. The rear ends are bullet proof as I have heard of the T98 4 speed. Clutching would be an issue I needto work out. Space is not an issue but cooling is and spring rate as well. Size ~~~EH! but wieght is another thing completely.

isnt that a 5 ton truck? but weight shouldnt be too much its spring so give it some helpers
and the other thing i would go with a 5speed and youre trucks rear if possible maybe even put the 8 lug front on it too to keep similar wheels and then get the 19.5s with 8 lug on um
