New IP/Injectors Smoke?

I recently replaced the IP, injectors, and return lines. I got the parts from MWFI. I set the pump on the timing mark and it sounds right but I did not have it timed. It has better power than it had before but my concern is that I really have to watch my foot while towing to limit the amount of black smoke out the exhast. Most driving is sea level to 1000ft and smoke gets progressively worse with altitude. Before the IP and injector change the only time I got any smoke was at altitudes above 3-4K. I have removed the "soup bowl" and have a K&N filter but have the original restrictive exhaust system. Is the black smoke a sign of the timing being off or am I simply feeding more fuel than the engine can burn with the available air.
Thanks

Re: New IP/Injectors Smoke?

black smoke is unburned fuel from not enough air getting in to burn it all so basically its just excessive fuel

Re: New IP/Injectors Smoke?

Well, the first thing that jumped out at me was where you purchased the IP and injectors. First, I would have it timed professionally. You could try to adjust the timing yourself to see if the smoke clears.
Recently, there were three guys who purchased their IP at MWFI, and had the same type of problem you are experiencing. Perhaps they may chime in here and give you some more information. Good luck, Tim
