My father has a 1993 Ford F350 dually with the 7.3 Diesel engine and 137,000 miles. It will not start. Fuel delivery has been verified, it will be getting a compression check shortly. Worst case scenerio if the compression is low, can anyone tell me a good resource for an inexpensive replacement engine? If he decides not to fix it does anyone know what the truck may be worth. It is cosmetically in very good condition with good rubber. It is an F-350 crew cab dually with an auto trans. Very nice looking truck.
Check to see if you get white smoke from the exhaust during cranking-if so, then you have fuel. The glow plugs must work on these engines for cold starts. The wait to start light should go on for 5-10 seconds. If one or more glow plugs are defective the controller thinks the glow plugs are hotter than they actually are and shuts them off too soon. Try cycling the switch off then on and wait untill the wts light goes out and then cycle again and try to start it. If this works then there is a glow plug problem. Don't use ether unless the glow plug relay has been disabled to prevent the ether in the pre-combustion chambers from exploding prematurely. Let us know what you find and good luck...

It does put out white smoke and it has a fairly new injection pump, so we know it's getting fuel. The glow plug controller is bad, we know that. It has been in a heated garage at 70 degrees and we've tried to start it with a rag with gas on it. Haven't tried ether, I have always been told ether will destroy a diesel. Anyway, I will let you know the results of the compression check.
OK - these engines require glow plugs to light them off even at higher temps than that. A small shot of ether should get things going and is ok if the glow plugs are not active. Should definitely start and run.....

Disable the glowplugs before using ether, just to be safe. Some of the plugs may still be working, but it only takes 1 or 2 bad ones to make it a bear to start. As was posted before though, if you are missing glowplugs it absolutely will not start no matter how warm the ambient temperature is.
