I just returned with a new MLPS it came with a new plug and no instructions.
I pulled old one off with trans in "N"
I will install new one with trans in "N"... 1. align the two marks on black plastic (not the notch)
2. install and turn a little to align the notch on shaft with notch on MLPS
Now for the plug... I can not get the wires out of the old plug to put them into the new plug!!!
There must be some sort of retaining clip yet it is very difficult to see and plug is short and in very tight location. Can someone tell me how to remove the wires from the OLD MLPS plug and the proper way to install in NEW MLPS plug???
Yes it "should" however I have a new one and this will effectively rule out this area should the tranny gear searching continue. You see if it continues then I will certainly be justified to think it is the plug.
Furthermore, the old plugs integrity has certainly been compromised. It let moisture into the connections causing them to corrode.
Depending on the plug the guys at the shop use a very small pick..... if you look closely there should be a U shaped (spring loaded) connection inside the plug. Normally the pick is gently pushed in the side (opposite the wire) and connector gently pulled out. You need to really look close from the back and decide which side is the release.
Thank you very much cdnsarguy ! I will put a pick in the back of the plug in the morning and pull on the wire. Guess i should also remove both neg. battery cables to be safe and not short out anything.
I was probing the front of the old plug earlier without any results. The back is very hard to get into because of the soft silicone protector. This will indeed be interesting because the silicone protector's holes are about the same size as the wires. Therefore the connecting end must also be very small. Small enough to slip through those holes to remove the old silicone protector and install the new one. Clear as mud huh. Can post pic if it would help.
In my case, there were several small plastic retaining clips. Like cdnsarguy said, a pick is probably the most useful tool in releasing the clips so you can pull the wires out. From your post, it sounds like you already have the new MLPS installed so I'll skip that part. Here's what you'll want to do:
Disconnect both neg battery cables
Put trans in neutral with parking brake on. Might want to block wheels off too.
Remove the red plastic piece from the old wiring harness.
Use a pick to catch the plastic retaining clip and pull it away from the wire. At the same time, you'll want to pull on the wire from the back of the harness. When the clip is released, the wire should pull out reasonably easy.
Grab the new wiring harness. Put the wire you just removed in the same position as it was in the old harness. You will hear a 'click' when the wire is properly seated in the new harness. Notice the metal connectors that slide over the pins on the new MLPS have a longer opening one way than the other. Make sure you orient the metal connectors properly so the harness will properly seat on the new MLPS pins.
Rinse and repeat until all of the wires are transferred to the new MLPS wiring harness.
Add some dielectric grease to the MLPS pins.
Seat the wiring harness on the MLPS. Check to make sure it's latched properly by giving it a wiggle.
Hi, is there anyway to get a picture of where the toothpic goes in? Also, are we certain that the wires go into the same position as the old style? I appreciate any and all help, thanks. Big Bob
If I'm not mistaken, there is a tool specially for that. Use of the screw driver works, but the plug can easily be damaged. The tool will release, but not damage. These tools can be found in electronics supply stores. I have used these tools on industrial equipment, and the automotive style stuff as well.
Thanks Steve 83. The image of the wire locations helped immensely! Got the new one on and so far so good.
