New seals and a bath...now NO START

Well, truck was running great... took off the valve covers and put new seals on them. Removed the fuel injection pump, fuel lines(to the injectors, and fuel filter(replaced with new). Put new seals on the piece that the injection pump mounts to. Put it all back on and intelligently forgot to tighten the bolts from the injector lines to the injectors.

Let the seals dry over night, used engine degreaser, (put suran rap and rubber band around intake) and rinsed it off.

Tried to fire it up, realized i didn't tighten injector lines, took care of that, tried again... nothing.

gave it a shot of ether while someone cranked it = major smoke out of intake and exhaust.

put a clothe soaked in diesel over intake, truck fired up then shut down...

Checked the bleader valve, fuel was there. Injector pump does have the 'click' when key is turned.

One thing i did notice... can't remember if its normal, but the 'water in fuel' light comes on (very dim) when i crank the engine.

The intake manifold still has a small puddle of water/degreaser sitting on it in injector pump area...

Well don't think i missed anything. Need to try n get her running for memorial day. Any ideas! Thanks guys!!!!

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Sounds like you took the timing cover off. If you also removed the timing gear then you need to make sure its lined back up.

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Is there an out of line? Your talking about the gear that is housed by thing you fill it with oil with right? How do you know if they're lined up correctly??

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

That isnt the same injection pump that he is talking about on his site. That is for a 6.9, they must have changed the pump cause the pics and some of the stuff he's explaining doesn't match up...

Anyone have a right up on adjusting the injection pump alignment on a 7.3?

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Ok, forget the last post. It is the same injection pump, but that write up is only about turning up the fuel, not aligning the timing gear with the engine. Does anyone know what to do? (or if i have to remove the injection pump again) how i know if the gears are aligned correctly?

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Ok, I did your searching for you....

Zigg's write up and a little help from Pete.

Should be what you need.

Not sure why Zigg's article isn't linked on his home page, but a quick search popped it up.

Best of luck,
Devo

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Ok, followed that write up exactly. had the damper lines lined up, the timing gear lined up and set in place... Made sure it was on the compression stroke (it was difficult to turn and i could hear the air compression escaping. still no start. I was finally able to fire it up on a small shot of ether and the gas peddle down. but as soon as i got off the gas she stalled. (i may have had the spring on the throttle control set at the wrong spot--donno if that would do it). reset that tried again and batteries started to go. They charging now...

Any ideas??

Not to sound dumb, but did you hook the two wire connector back up on the IP?

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

OK so you have the timing lined up on the IP to Housing...try advancing it 1/8 inch.. IE turn the IP to the pax side 1/8 inch..tighten nuts and try again. YOU did align the "Ys" on the cam gear and the timing gear right....... with the engine at TDC....

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Ok, I guess I was not on a compression stroke... I finally got it fired up but like the write up link listed above says - if its set up on an exhaust stroke then it will smoke like crazy, no power, and a pain in the --- to start. Well all symptoms were there.

I could have sworn it was on compression tho... it was getting pritty tough to turn the crank and i could hear air escaping as i turned it...

Thanks for the ideas guys....

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

Got her started and ran it down the road to get all the fuel outa the cylinders and what not... still smokes, not white anymore, now its blue. Idles rough, esp at first start up then gets a little better. also seems to have problems once it gets to 2000rpms when driving...

Is this all fine tuning stuff or am i off i tooth?? (I was very careful about lining it up)--will it even start when its off by a tooth?

Re: New seals and a bath...now NO START

If you were still 180 off this would probably be of more help, but...

I just looked at the 6.9 I'm rebuilding, and of course I was able to line up all the gears prior to replacing the front cover. With everything lined up, and the engine sitting at TDC, the dowel pin on the IP gear sits at about 4 o'clock. Your's might be different, but it shouldn't be...
