No oil pressure when accelerating

After my truck warms up, I can not accelerate without the oil pressure dropping.

This is a '93 Factory Turbo motor. I thought maybe the turn was going bad because it whistles loud, and the pressure went down as boost went up.

Today it was much worse so I decided to park it...

At idle the gauge says it has pressure. I noticed when I took of the oil fill cap that it was making a scraping noise. I shut it down and then stuck my finger in there. It was dry with some vaporized oil coating stuff.

The only work done recently was an oil change, and I used a powerstroke filter and Delo 400 (15-40 I think).

I was thinking it could be the oil pump dieing, but am not sure.
Any ideas?

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

Are you looking at the factory gauge? It is nothing but an idiot light wired to look like an actual gauge. Changes in voltage, resistance at the sending unit etc will change the gauge reading. Plumb in a mechanical gauge before making any conclusions regarding oil pressure.

Noise with the cap off is normal, what you are hearing is the IP gears.

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

I thought the gauges were like that, but got panicked and forgot.
I will try and find a mechanical gauge tomorrow and give that a try.
Thanks.

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

Do not take the "idiot" guage as gospel. Just for fun I put a T where my mechanical guage and "factory" sender is located. From idle to 2000 rpm my mechanical goes from 20 - 50 psi, the factory guage goes from the middle DOWN to the L. Put in a mechanical before you drive your self crazy.

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

There is an electrical connection is it secure on the sender, a loose connection will cause your problem......

Does the engine rattle like it would with bad lifters......if not then things may be ok. Who did the oil change..... double check the oil level Hot and cold....... take the hot reading as gospel.

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

I bought a mechanical today, so I have a project for tomorrow.

No lifter noise and I did the oil change.

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

My oil guage gets crazy sometimes too. I get that same scraping noise when my cap is off. General consensus around here is factory gauges are crap and sounds like yours aint so good either.

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

The mechanical gauges shows up to 45 psi when I am accelerating, lower than 10 when idling.
That seems kind of low. Do I need to bleed the air from the feed line on the mechanical gauge?

Re: No oil pressure when accelerating

Bleed the line of air ........yes

Specs.......Idle is 10 PSI and 40-70 at 3000+ RPM

EDIT: During coffee this morning at the shop I brought up your problem of no oil pressure/flow at the sender hole. Mike the Ford tech suggested putting air in the sender hole to see if it clears it. He thinks it may be plugged.....
