Oil pan removal to check for bad con rod or wrist pin?

Well I'm still trying to track down my terrible knocking noise so I was thinking of removing the oil pan to see if any of the conecting rod bearings are somehow loose or a wrist pin has some play. First is it possible to tell either of these things from pulling the oil pan?

What is involved in removing the oil pan? Does the cross member have to come off? New gasket?

Thanks,

-Rob

i learned the hard way... if it runs leave it, your talking a large job. i was unable to remove the oilpan on my 1990 without removing the engine. and i wish i would have left my engine in till it blew, you can find replacement engines pretty cheap.

It is hard to tell where the knock is coming from without dissasembling the motor. Did you lookinto the cylinder heads to see if it is a loose valve guide??

Good Luck!!!
Matt

Wrist pin bushing or wallowed out wrist pin bore----no way. Same goes for a cracked piston skirt. Either could cause the noise you're hearing.
