Oil usage?

Just did my second oil change (first was a day after purchase). Had 4000 miles on it mostly commuting to work. Using the "big" 2 qt filter, I got 10 quarts (measured" back out of the engine, when I had put 11 in. Is this about normal for a BOOB truck?

Re: Oil usage?

One qt of oil in 4000 miles....that's down right terrible!!! You should sell that truck to me real cheap . Put a by-pass oil filter on that engine now, and it'll stay tight. Baja

Re: Oil usage?

That is excellent! One quart in 4K miles, all I can say is keep up the good driving.

Re: Oil usage?

Keep in mind that you have probably burned more than 1 quart, because part of what you drained is diluted with water, fuel, etc.... That is why new cars don't "use" oil. Any engine will burn some oil.

1 or 2 quarts between oil changes sounds fine to me.

[/ QUOTE ]Not much more. According to my last oil analysis, fuel dilution was <1%, water was 0%, and soot was .5%. That's less than .15 quart. Oil consumption was less than a quart/3456 miles according to the dipstick.
And how much oil is retained by the filter media?
sojerguy's 7.3 motor sounds as trashed (healthy) as mine with 243K miles on it.
