OK, how do you tell if what type of "gears" your truck has?
How do I tell if my truck has 4.10 gears or 3.54 gears ?
If it has the 3.54 gears, how hard is it to convert/change/upgrade it to the 4.10 gears?

Re: OK, how do you tell if what type of "gears" your truck has?
Have an assistant handy. Take a long piece of string, and tape it to the driveshaft, on the bottom. Now put a chalk mark on your tire. Have the assistant hold the string, as you drive the truck forward one revolution of the tire. Now look at the string and see how many times it wound around the driveshaft. about 3 and a half times you have 3.54, and over 4 times, then you have the 4.10's. Easy is a matter of money. LOL!
Re: OK, how do you tell if what type of "gears" your truck has?
look at the tag on the rearend or front dif or use the onwers manual and look at your code on the door build plate to tell what it has .

Re: OK, how do you tell if what type of "gears" your truck has?
Yes, Tire size would affect it. You can do it by yourself. Just jack the truck up and pick a tire to spin. Note where the yoke on the rearend is, then spin the whole works and start counting.

[ QUOTE ]
Wouldn't tire size affect that outcome??
[/ QUOTE ]No, tire size won't affect the outcome. One rotation of a large tire or one rotation of a small tire is still one rotation of the ring gear. The distance the truck moves on one rotation of the tire changes, but not the relationship between axle and driveshaft rotations.
Re: OK, how do you tell if what type of "gears" your truck has?
Correct. And jacking the truck up and spinning one wheel is not accurate. If the wheel on the other side doesn't turn the same amount, then the spider gears are going to multiply the shaft rotation some amount. Now if you have a locking diff, that would be fine, but I'm going to guess that's a big unknown right now.
Re: OK, how do you tell if what type of "gears" your truck has?
I would be surprised if the rear axle was not a 410 on a F350 dually.

Thanks for your help .... sorry it's taken so long to respond
Things have been very "hectic" the past few months ... Yep, it is the 410
I don't know why I am stressing over this ... my friend's all say ... stop worrying that truck is more than sufficient to pull my 6-horse with 3 horses on it ... but, the tag on the truck's door says 10000 gvw and I am certain that with horses on board that I'm looking at closer to 12,000 maybe 14,000#'s .... The trailer does have electric brakes on all four wheels ... I just am so afraid of damaging my truck ... I really can't afford to buy something else ... and this is the only trailer I have that will fit my big WB's ...
Guys, any suggestions would be appreciated.

well does it work now?
if its working now then use it till it dies then get a 450 realy brakes on all fours and if ur allready using it i do not see y not?
imo i think a truck like that should have no problem with that trailer especialy with brakes on all wheels use air ride or sway control to help the horses behave is all

GVW = Gross Vehicle Weight, which means what the maximum the truck itself can weigh. I.E. Truck weight plus tongue weight of your tralier (and anything else you are carrying in the truck).
What you are really looking for is GCVW = Gross Combined Vehicle weight, that isn't labeled on the truck data plate. It is the rating that includes total trailer weight plus truck weight. It is higher than 10,000 lbs. However, I don't remember what it is, or where to find it.
To give you an idea, I have 1993 F-350 Crew Cab Dually with a GVW of 9,999lbs. It weighs over 7,000lbs empty, if trailer weight was limited by GVW, then the heaviest trailer I could pull would be less than 3,000lbs; not even enough to pull a two horse trailer with one horse.
I believe you are fine, maybe someone else on the forum can point us where to find the rated GCVW. I've pulled 5 ton of hay on a 3,000lb trailer many times, including over Blue Diamond Pass in NV (very steep), and not had any problems.
Re: Thanks for your help .... sorry it's taken so long to respond
If you have the owner's manuals, the CGVWR is listed in there - it's tabulated by engine/trans/rear diff ratios. I'm not sure if it's in the main book or in the diesel supplement.
My '91 4x4 F250 HD (HD=4.10 rear and F-350 brakes) is somewhere in the neighborhood of 14k lbs CGVWR - so I'm guessing you're OK. The CGWVR rating has nearly everything to do with braking capacity, and little to do with acceleration. If you don't have the books, maybe someone with a set of '93 manuals can look it up for you!

Hey lady, don't sweat it. I live in Oregon, we have some mighty big mountains here, I just towed a 2tom chevy truck on a 20' flatbed bumper pull behind my '93 F250 w/3.55 gears. Just go double nickle, it's OK. My understanding is that the tranny is the week link in thease rigs, so get a good cooler installed, seeings how you live in Arizona.....
