Planned upgrades are a new and better turbo and larger exhaust pipes than the 21/2s that are already under the rig/ would like a 6 spd tranny but dont know if that is a feasable or smart investment yet.

It's to stop the alternator belt on the v-belt setups from flopping around so much. One of thesem days, I'll get around to doing something with mine... http://photos.thedieselstop.com/show...amp;thecat=500

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

I asked at Autozone yesterday about ordering an Idler pully, about $32. I'm going to check with Napa and see what they have, since Napa is closer to my house.

My alt belt flaps all over the place no matter how tight I set it. I need this mod (thanks Gringo).

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

Just go into Autozone and order the pulley? Just any 4" diameter pulley? Is there a part number associated with the pulley? To fit the V belt properly and size of bolt hole need more specifics. Great idea.
Just installed new belt yesterday.

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

Still working on the specifics...new Idler Pully must fit a V-belt and have sealed bearings inside of pully.

I haven't pulled my bolt yet, but I will this weekend.

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

The bolt hole in the pulley is larger than the bolt in the water pump and too short once the pulley is there. So, I went to Ace Hardware and bought a 1/2" longer bolt and one heli-coil that fits the bolt. Cut the tang off the heli-coil and screw it onto the bolt and it will center in the pulley hole. OkieG

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

You're very welcome, guys. My idler pulley has been on for 2 yrs now and still with the same alt belt. Before the idler, my belt would vibrate soo much that it hit the lower bolt head of the fuel filter bracket. That was the wear point on my engine. Re: okiegringo idler pulley

I'm planning to do the okiegringo pulley mod. I went to autozone and purchased the 45954 pulley like in the pic but it looks different than the one in the pic. The one in the pic looks like it has a offset hub on it. The one I purchased doesn't have that. I even went to NAPA where that # crossed to a 38003 and got the same result. Is it just the pic that makes it look that way or what? Also the "V" doesn't seem wide enough for the belt. Is that ok because it is just an idler or am I getting the wrong pulley?

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

I don't get it, i tried this mod with the pulley from autozone and there was like.. 1 micron between the mod pulley and one of the main pulleys on the water pump and with the engine running it would vibrate the pulley just a little bit and it would beat against the other pulley resulting in this clinging sound. So i took it off... What happend to me? Everyone elses seems to work fine.

Re: okiegringo idler pulley

I put one on mine a while back, works great .I was changing belts every six months.I used Dblacks pics.for reference.I cut a piece of 1/2 inch stainless tubing and stuck it in the middle to take up the slack....Robert

Eric, is your water pump pulley bent? Probably got bent the last time the alt belt broke and wrapped around it. I'm still running the same belt. OkieGringo
