Operating temp on 94' E40D transmission...

The truck I bought has a aftermarket transmission temperature gauge in it. Was wondering what a safe running temperature is for this transmission? It usually runs around the 170-180*F....

That sounds about right. Mine runs around 160°-170°F unloaded at highway speeds. I have a deep aluminum pan and aftermarket trans cooler.

Re: Operating temp on 94' E40D transmission...

I think they usually say you can run all day long at 200*, you don't want to see much more then that for long, 225* you pull over. Where do you guys have your senders mounted?

Re: Operating temp on 94' E40D transmission...

Where are you taking the temp reading from?

Tranny Pan, Side of tranny or in the hot line coming out of the tranny before any coolers?

If in the Tranny pan or the side of tranny you can run upto 200° on a pull, after than back off her a little to let it cool.

Now if your taking the temp from the hot line before any coolers you can run at 225° all day long and not worry one bit about it. I installed mine in the hot line before the coolers and the only time I had to worry about it was when I was backing up. Now if I can off the highway I would see it spike up once I got into city traffic but I would just take it easy then I would let her cool down to BELOW 200° on my gauge before shutting her off. Typically I let her idle until the temp was around 180°.

Re: Operating temp on 94' E40D transmission...

hmmm...I'll have to check under the truck. I'm not sure where the sensor is pulling from? At least this gives me an idea....
