Over heated engine and tranny

The temp gauge dint rise on the beast(above normal) , so I'm not sure whats goin on .

I had to push the 2ft of snow out of my driveway . The truck been sitting since the E4OD is in limp mode . . . I know , not smart .

Anyway , First off , radiator was steaming , I stoped the truck right away . I opened it up , and I had to add 3 gallons of fluid!! I had just added the SCA and did the coolant thing right before summer . So what are the possibilities here?

Second , the tranny spit out some fluid.....and the fluid smells a little burnt . Some of it hit the exhaust and actually started on fire! I put it out with the snow the piece of junk left behind . I had no idea why its in limp mode , the tach is good.....yet dosrent work . The voltage regulator is also screwy .

So 1) where could the coolant be going 2) How much damage did I likly do to the tranny?

Re: Over heated engine and tranny

You may have had air locked in the system from before....... and trying to push snow when trans is in limp mode which is second gear and reverse was just plain silly.......... Your not the first guy to think you can push snow in linp mode there have been others in the past 3 years. They toasted a good trans which sounds like what you may have done too...

There has to be a reason why it is in limp mode, lets sort that out first. Are you getting any codes, TCIL flashing, give us some hints......

Re: Over heated engine and tranny

I know , I was almost emabrased to post that , lol . At least there were some before me .

Anyway there is no flashing light , its just on constantly . I took the tach out , cleaned it up , and tested it , it read about 2400 onj the meter . So the tach is good , but isnt working .

I bought electrical cleaner and cleaned all my harness connections just in case it was that , no go .

I have been having problems with the voltage regulator . One day it just started over charging , I was trying to fix that during the same week it went into limp mode , not sure if that could be related , but it went into limp mode on its own when I started her in the morning , I hadnent changed anything previouslly .

So I'm looking at the schmetic for the tach , but im not good with this stuff , ill try to take a pic of it later if I can get ahold of my wifes digital camera for more help .

Re: Over heated engine and tranny

I'm thinking maybe ECC relay , I searched and found a post by baja that had the same symptoms . Mine has some oil around it , Is there any way to test this thing?

I might just goto autozone and buy it . What should I do about the tranny fluid? It smells burnt , do i drop the pan and empty it that way?

Re: Over heated engine and tranny

probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change the fluid and filter.

Re: Over heated engine and tranny

You can do that, remember to leave one bolt in a front corner lossened a little, this holds that corner up and fluid will drain out the opposite side, then remove that screw. .

To fully drain the TC there is a small plug on it, just rotate TC until the plug is at 6 oclock, remove drain then replace the plug.

If you get a new filter it should come with a new gasket. Ensure the old oring on the filter neck comes out too....do not scratch the bore. Clean the magnet and replace it in the pan and install the pan with new gasket usually done clean and dry, if you use anything use proper gasket RTV and just a small amount on one face of the gasket.

It should take about 12 qts plus of Mercon/Dexron 3 to refill mine did. Read the dipstick for a fluid level reading. Start the engine and move the gear lever to fwd then reverse several time until the trans shifts into gears and it wants to move. Checking fluid again topping up as necessary and do a close to home test drive. Hope it works out for you.

Re: Over heated engine and tranny

Thx ALOT for the help pete , and aak . It was in fact the relay , cost me 13$ . Now if I wasn't a bonehead and waited , I wouldn't have burned my oil and saved 37$ for the gasket and filter .

It probably wasn't a bad idea to change oil+gasket anyway , pan was leaking from the gasket . Hopefully I dint hurt the tranny .

It dint seem any different up and down my driveway before I drained , but the store is closed so I can't buy any tranny oil till tomarrow . Thank god you posted again because I had no clue about the TC drain or the magnet .
