In general, electrical issues as you have described can often be traced to the wiring, as in broken wires. Often this break occurs in the area between the bed & the cab. Examine this area 1st.
Look for any wear along the routing of the wire bundle.
Seen lots of what you have as stated usually broken wires near the bumper or the light connector on the drivers side at the bumper. 87 -89 wiring is the same check azone for the repair and wiring section.
Figured it out. My excuse is that I just got the truck.
The problem is all in the dash pull switch for me.
The switch appears to have 4 positions.
In = Off
1st = front parking lights come on
2nd = All lights work
All the way out = tail lights, running lights, dash lights, and rear plate lights don't work, all other lights work.
Hard to get it in "2nd position" it just pops all the way out and then I have to click it in.
Just glad they all work and I don't have to trouble shoot wiring.
^^^^^ +1; switch is faulty. It should work like any US 20th-Century headlight switch with three positions. Don't be surprised if the connector is electrical/burn damaged as well.
