Somewhere under the truck there is a popping/cracking sound. When I put it in gear and just give it a little pedal I hear it. I can stop again and it may or may not happen. Seems to be heard when turning as well. the problem is that I can't get under the truck and listen because the engine is so loud I can't hear anything. I do notice that where the axles pivot just under the oil pan, there seems to be alot of clearance around the pins as though the bushings may be worn, but I don't know how much if any is normal. I do know that the truck shakes quite abit and the steering is hard to control. I have had it at the local spring and brake shop for a frontend alignment last year and they said all was ok but it was still hard to keep on the road after the alignment. What should I be looking for/at?

Check the Radius arm bushings at the bracket/frame connection (under your feet) To check them get someone to slowly drive the truck in forward or reverse then apply the brakes with moderate effort. You may see the wheel move forward and/or backwards due to loose bushings. Do a search for Radius arm bushing replacement.
Yours is a F250 so the frame crack at the steering box was not applicable only on F350.....

Rubber radius arm bushings wear out pretty quick. One of the company trucks I used to drive was missing the bushings completely. They had just fallen off.
Pop your head under the truck, you can usually visually ID if the bushings are worn or deteriorated. If the bushings are good, they will be tight against the washers and bracket. If there is any space, they are worn.

Last year when I had the front end aligned I also had the radius arm bushings replaced. They still look good....

Don't know about an 89, but once when I had my 93 in for warranty work, I asked about a popping noise I was getting. They said there was a service bulletin about frame rivets making a popping noise.
I heard that the rivet is somewhere near the power steering pump? Anyone know which rivet or have a photo to refrence it?
