Popping....

When the truck flexes while drining over rough terrain or even making a hard turn on pavement the truck makes a popping noise. It sounds as though it comes from the driver's side front of the vehicle. Any thoughts?

Re: Popping....

Our 93' does it too. Very annoying. I remember a thread while back that somebody said it was their cruise control unit, where it was mounted. I know that's not it on mine. Almost sounds like it is coming from the firewall or under the dash. If you figure it out, let ME know.

Re: Popping....

These are the bolts that hold the hood hinges on, IIRC. Same problem on my truck. I removed the bolts, greased them, and the problem hasn't returned.

Not the bolts on the firewall... the bolts on the front quarter panel. They're vertically-oriented and just below the hoodline. Water gets into them and rust forms, causing the noise.

Re: Popping....

Mine has always done this too. I asked about it once at the dealer when I was in for some warranty work. They said it was from rivets in the frame. Apparently there was a TSB issued on this. The repair called for replacing the rivets with bolts, however the dealer told me that it didn't always cure the problem, and there was a risk of the bolts working loose. I never did have it done, and it still pops occasionally.

Re: Popping....

I would not call mine a popping, but it does make a sound on the drivers side. I think mine is more in the coil spring pocket area. IIRC, I have a bit of play with the washer that is under the bolt that holds the spring down. I know my washer will spin freely, but the bolt is tight. I always wondered if there was an insulator under the spring? I have not been able to find one listed on the parts catalog at work though.

That thought has been in the back of my head. Nick recommended popping the rivets on the brackets and pulling the whole shooting match to change 'em, then bolt it back in.

Me thinks going to 4WD would be easier!

Re: Popping....

The sound comes more from the top area than the bottom, so I could believe it might be the hood hinges, or some other bolt in that area. It's a torsional stress induced noise.

Re: Popping....

Radius arm bushings just replaced about 8 months ago. I believe that I will check the hood hinge bolts. Sometimes the noise seems to be fainter than at other times so it may very well be them seeing that the passenger side bolts are farther away from me in the ****pit!!!

Read in another post in the psd forum about maybe transmission crossmember or motor mounts?

Any thoughts there?

Re: Popping....

I have a popping under similar circumstances also, but mine is a very loud clunk or pop coming from the rear of the truck. Im not sure what it is though.

Re: Popping....

I have a loud pop sound when I turn either direction. It started after I put on my 4 in lift kit. It doesn't do it all the time though. Could it be the leafs shifting when there is lateral flex? Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Popping....

Just got rid of the popping noise I had.
Shock on one side "egged" out the mounting lower end.
And I replaced upper & lower ball joints on the same side.

Re: Popping....

Ya know what...

It might be your transmission crossmember. I had mine tac welded into place... popping stopped.

If the previous suggestion I made didn't work... try that.

The truck sounded like it was going to come apart whenever I pulled up to camp at the horse races I do. Got lots of attention as I popped my way into a parking spot (offroad).

I'd suggest you only do this if you don't anticipate having to do any engine/trans work anytime soon--not all shops have the stuff needed to undo the tac weld. Held up my transmission replacement a couple years ago for 4 days while we waited for a welder to come.
