How old is the rad cap...... 13PSI Note: any significant mark/depression in the cap gasket ...requires a replacement Your problem is not normal, when was the last coolant and Tstat change.

Water pump is not hard to replace and not that expensive. You do need a special tool to take the clutch fan off. I used one free just put 100$ deposit at auto part's store. It takes about an hour and a half to do.

thanks lunas and chuckster.this is what is going on.the truck starts fine.after 10 minutes of idling the antifreeze over flow starts to fill up and the temp gauge goes up slightly. when i started the truck cold i had the rad cap off to check for bubbles in the rad,no bubbles.i picked up a new thermostat from the int. dealer($28 ,ford wanted $34).would a bad thermostat cause this problem if so why and should i replace the water pump (i have a 94 turbo diesel parts truck, can i use a used water pump)

No bubbles at idle might be misleading if you are doing it with the engine cold. Take the cap off and run the engine long enogh for the thermostat to open and watch for flow. You might need to test the coolant for presence of combustion gases. IIRC test kits are available at most A/P stores. like Pete said your problem is not normal.

I don't like the idea of a used W/P..too many variables

Personaly, I would test the A/F for combustion gases before I did much else.

When my water pump went out last spring in Montana. I pulled into my driveway it just started leaking fluid out of water pump. I think there is like a plug that is desighned to leak when they wear out. That was how my pump went out. I think mine was 70$,worth it for the lifetime warrenty.

My vote is the T-stat for the money and ease. Simple thing to try before bigger $$ on a water pump.
