Re: PS2000 Finished

[ QUOTE ]
Scotty, pushing the top of the pump towards the drivers side advances timing.

[/ QUOTE ]

HUH???? Are you sure there partner... Think about which way the gears turn... Front standing in front of the grill.

Crank gear turns clockwise
Cam gear turns counter clockwise
then Injection pump gear turns clockwise. So if you tip the pump top towards the driver it's retarded because your following it's rotation but if you rotate the pump top towards the passenger you are advancing the timing...

Re: PS2000 Finished

gotta agree with travis - towards the passenger side advances, drivers side retards.

[ QUOTE ]
Gotcha, might goof around with it a little today since it has stopped raining, but it is a pain to get to the bottom nuts on the IP without the special wrench. Anyhow, what do you think about an 1/8 or so towards the pass side should get me where I want to be? I hate not having the correct tools for the job, but, I will just have to suffer until the wife clears me for some tool money. Scotty

[/ QUOTE ]

Scotty,
With regards to the wrench. I just took and old long shaft boxed end wrench and put some heat to it till I got it where it was useful. It was just an old pos that I had layin 'round the tool box. Made life more simple but looks kinda funny.

Re: PS2000 Finished

And if you don't have a torch handy, I took a trusty Craftsman wrench and hit with the grinder..thinned her out...til she fit nicely.
Now she stays in the side panel on the door for those 'speedy' adjustments when needed...

Re: PS2000 Finished

I may try that tomorrow, that bottom nut is a pain, I am waiting for the boys to tell me if retarding is towards pass side or drivers side. I am "almost" positive it is towards the pass side, but either way, I will try and figure it out. Scotty

Re: PS2000 Finished

Put a mark on the large brass adjustment fitting and a mark on the housing that is aligned with the one on the brass. Loosen the jamb nut and turn the large brass fitting 1/4" that will raise the cut in pressure about 2 psi. That may also help with the knock situation.

To retard timming, top of pump twoward drivers side, 1/16th of an inch is just under 4°, the thickness of the stamped line is just about 2°.

Re: PS2000 Finished

Huff, did you continue to operate your pump with the cold start solenoid controlling housing pressure for modified timing at the predetermined boost level? You had posted some numbers back a while ago, and I was curious if that had worked out or not?

Re: PS2000 Finished

For right now, I am going ot leave it where it is at, at least until I can narrow down if it is the HG's or not. If it is not the gaskets, I will retard it a bit more towards the drivers side and turn the propane back up. Right now, I ran the truck home on a large hill that usually required the truck to come out of OD and this time it wizzed up the hill, NO SWEAT, so pray for me fellers.. Scotty

Re: PS2000 Finished

Yep it still works great. I set the timming at 5° btdc @ 1400 rpm with power to the cold start solenoid then at 5psi of boost the hobs switch cuts power to the solenoid and the timming retards by 2° btdc no knock from the lpg, just smooth power.

Re: PS2000 Finished

Perhaps Huff, you should re-describe what you have done there, for the guys running reasonably high boost numbers, and also propane. Heck, I'm inclined to add the system to my engine, even without propane (I do reach 12lbs if pushed, but generally keep to lower levels these days as I forsee keeping her running as is till the game is over! Touch wood and all that.
I think some of us had questions whether the cold dump solenoid would handle being on all the time during low boost, but if it has worked this long (must be at least a year already?) then duty cycle must not be a factor.
Again, I think this simple little mod deserves more scrutiny and credit

Re: PS2000 Finished

The reason I did it was to relive some of the thermal dynamic stress on the engine. It might lose a couple hp (big deal) but the engine sure sounds and runs great. Even at 30° F the truck starts with just a ½ sec on the starter. It does idle a little slower (about 75rpm) for the first few minutes when cold.
