Radiator Cap revisited.

Just checked with Autozone today for a 7 lb cap, could'nt find one, there computer for my truck shows a 13 lb cap and thats what I have, fact is I just got it a couple weeks ago. I'll trade you. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif[/img]

I'm losing a little coolant and cain't find out where it's going, a gallon in 200 miles, hope it's not cavitation. Just borrowed there radiator pressure checker, will test today (Saturday).

Check the weep hole under the water pump......there are several hidden areas too..... The front plate under the water pump has been known to rust and leak inward to the oil/engine. You may smell it but a bad heater core and a wet pax carpet area are possible.Check the trans cover drip tube, there are frost pluggs on the back of the block hidden. Could be a bad fitting return hose to the overflow tank at the rad. So many places......just realy look hard when your pressurized.

<font color="red">Edit... pull a valve cover and check for slimy green sludge, that would indicate internal leak.</font>

Checked at 17 lbs cold, upper rad hose at the engine started to leak then, tightened up. Pumped up to 17 lbs again, held pressure for an hour. Gonna keep the 13 lb cap.

Yeah, don't drop the pressure anyway, pressure is part of what holds back the cavitation from occurring. However it is a long term sort of thing. I have no problem defeating the sealing ability a radiator cap on any vehicle that has a gross leak, so that I can limp it home without having the leak be pressurized and risk breaking the engine.
