Has anyone fabricated a ram air system through their hood?? I wanna pull more power outta my idi by stuffing some more air into it but don't wanna pay out almost the same price that i paid for the truck to turbo charge it... Any ideas or "already done it pics"??

No, not yet....but in the near future. There was a post some time ago and one of the members had pictures of a ram air modification that came in behind the grille on the passenger side, but would be next to impossible with the ac compressor and condenser coil intact-he had removed his. For those of us that are aesthetically challenged (my wife's description of me) it would make sense to have some kind of hood scoop to bring in cool air and take advantage of ram-air effects. The ram effect follows the laws of physics; 4000 feet per minute equate to 1" water column pressure-or 45mph. This is a squared relationship, so 70mph = 2.3". This is at least enough to overcome the filter loss and should do a lot of good. I had a '67 GTO in the 70s and had a working hood scoop-used a motorcycle inner tube to seal the od of the air filter to the bottom of the hood and drilled some 1/2" holes in the bottom of the air filter housing to drain water-never had a problem. Something similar would work for this application. Even something as simple as a 6" elbow stuck up through the hood would work. What does everyone else think??

I've never seen a ram air set up with the air filters that sit ontop of the engine like this. Do you need a special filter if your going to ram the air directly down into it from the hood directly above it instead of it coming into the side of the bowl like factory?... any idea of what sort of power gains you'd be looking at?? I've been seaching for a somewhat large ram air piece thats already manufactured that I can put on it... but pep boys isn't impressing me-they all look too small.
Thanks for the tech info!

Hey I just changed over my air intake. Used a filter from Autozone. They claim it's just as good as K&N. A 4" dryer ell ( can adjust it for any angle ) and a 8 ft. section of dryer 4" duct. Don't stretch it out and it's real solid. Had to cut off about 14". Removed the baffle in the original filter unit. Had to flatten the two top lumps on the original filter box, once it's on there it's hell to get off, no need for a clamp there. Drilled one hole thru radiator mount for wire tie. Looks like there is plenty access to cold air where it's placed. Made one heck of a difference no smoke when idleing now. Check pics out. Don't know if it will increase mileage yet, but it sure act like the engine gets more air.
Thanks for the info OLDBULL. I like the idea... Might i ask... why didnt you completely remove the filter housing and connect your new intake directly to the engine intake? I'd be afraid of it creating a bunch of turbulance in the big open airfilter housing.
Do you ever have problems with water or mud gettin on your filter?

Never had it on the road til today. Idled just fine with no smoke like i used to have idling. I don't think you would get any mud or water cause it's behind the radiator mount bracket, but there is a couple of openings that would let cold air to filter. Thought of a ram air on the hood but could'nt figure how to do it and all the water to contend with in rain also opening the hood then making good connection back again. Thought I had everything good to go until I road tested today. Read my post today 7.3L Oil at #8 cyl.

wow, sounds like a mess! I can't imagine that would have to do with a modification to your air intake... just a stupid question...you didn't drop anything into your engine did ya?

I'm quite sure it's not because of the air intake change. I did have the air intake covered before removing the head. Any thing inadvertantly drop in the air intake would have to go thru the intake valve, and #8 was at the top when I replaced the head. Well I'll know when I pull the head again. Just alot of hard work again. LOL
I 've turned my breather to point just behind the fuel filter, added 4 inch flex aluminum dryer pipe and feed it along side and down then under the pass. battery tray. Ends up in the wheel well. I cut a grill into the bumper to put more air into the general area but it is not a direct connection. Been that way for 3 years now, no bugs but can't really remember how much it helps.
