Real Smoker -

Have a 94 that will smoke you out when started. Does not matter if it's cold or been running all day. After about 10-15 seconds of running then it the smoke stops.

Recently had all the glow plugs replaced and the glow plug controller box deal due to really really hard starts. Almost seems to smoke more now than before they were changed.

Any ideas on what and where to look for the problem?

Ron

Re: Real Smoker -

Ron,
Welcome. It sounds like to me your fuel system is in need of some work. It's either the timing is off, teh injection pump is worn out or you ahve a couple of not so good injectors working on you. That is if you've ruled out all the simple stuff like a plugged fuel filter, restricted intake, blocked exhaust etc. Good luck with it. The turbo IDI is highly coveted.

I agree with JD. A return line kit is very inexpensive and usually resolves most air problems. What's the milage on the rig? It seems that most IP's/Inj's give up the ghost at around 100-150 K miles.

Re: Real Smoker -

We have had the truck for about two years now - and when I say we I mean that my boss bought the truck for and gave to one of my foreman. Truck has about 240K on it. Company pays for the oil changes, fuel filters, air filters, etc etc (damn near everything) and we keep up on all that.

I'll recheck all the simple stuff again and then guess we will have the injectors, etc looked into as you suggest.

Thanks.

Ron

I would bet my last dollar that the return lines and caps were disturbed and air is being sucked back into the filter header. What is the fuel pressure and volume from the filter header.

Do pressure and flow test on the fuel at the Schrader valve on the filter(FSS- fuel shutoff switch disconnected). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation proceedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.

So your thinking that when we had the glow plugs and box replaced they disturbed the return lines and caps? Don't have a clue as to what the pressure and volume would be at the moment - haven't done anything to it as of yet - looking for starting points.

Thanks,

Ron
