is it the rear end or brakes

i went to leave work tonight and the back end of the truck felt like it was bouncing.i jacked the back axle up and put the tranny in neutral.it was hard to turn the back wheels by hand.when i turned one wheel on one side the other wheel would turn in the opposite direction,is this normal.can i drive the truck for about 5 miles to get the truck home or will i cause more damage.the truck also did this when i put the truck in neutral and coasted across the parking lot.what could be the problem and what do you think it would cost

If you mean the truck was pulsating across the parking lot as you drove, most likely the rear brakes were/are applied or the drums are possibly out of round....... Check the cables are slack....

I don't think a rock could have gotten in there but you never know. My guess is just some sized, rusty or sticky brake components, maybe a broken spring.
If you find yourself in that situation again you could always try to pound the backing plate of the drum with a hammer or rock in attempt to free up something that might be sticking.

And yes, the wheels do turn in the opposite direction when jacked up.

Good luck buddy!

Check your universal joints. I had one seize up and it felt like the rear end.

pulled the wheels off this morning and it turned out to be the brakes where worn down and the brake cylinder right side came out to far making the brake stick

Not pointing fingers, but your findings just exemplify the reason there are MAX/MIN sizes for brake drums and rotors. Ensure after any brake job that your drums/rotors are within specs or the end result when things wear or you fail to adjust them as required will be the above or worse.

Remember backing up, stopping hard and driving ahead, repeat as necessary will adjust the rears if everything is working right. Try it you may like the results... higher pedal with less travel is always my result.

Rememberance Day 2009............. be there!!!!!!!!!

You might have a damaged ring and pinion.

I looked at the video, could it be the midway carrier between the two drive shafts? There is a bearing, I believe, and a rubber mount for the bearing. See if the rubber mount is there, damaged, missing chunks, or the like. Or, if that bearing is shot.
